Webinar: "Origins of Life: The Lost City and Icy Worlds"

Date: August 12, 2024

Join the NASA Astrobiology Science Communication Guild for a presentation on a project in partnership with NASA Science Activation SCoPE to turn data from an expedition to the Lost City hydrothermal vents into an educational show for the public.

Abstract:

“Origins of Life: The Lost City and Icy Worlds” is a NASA SCoPE grant in partnership with Arizona State University and OpenSpace. SCoPE grants connect subject matter experts with NASA SciAct Teams. OpenSpace, a NASA SciAct initiative, is open-source interactive data visualization software designed to visualize the universe and portray our ongoing efforts to investigate the cosmos.

The speaker will be Sarah Treadwell, also known as Space Case Sarah, an astrobiology science communicator, who recently sailed to the Lost City Hydrothermal Field onboard the JOIDES Resolution on Expedition 399. Sarah is a lifelong student and explorer dedicated to learning about the cosmos and the wonders of our pale blue dot. Her primary focus is astrobiology, as she loves how it requires all the sciences to come together. Her source of inspiration is always her children, hoping to serve as a role model to them on how to live a full and purposeful life.

Together, Sarah and the team at OpenSpace are designing new visualizations of the vent field within the software to connect the importance of the Lost City Hydrothermal Field to the research of origins of life and the search for life on icy worlds. They additionally will place some of the important research vessels into the program to highlight the collaborative and interdisciplinary nature of astrobiology research. This presentation will share some of the usages for OpenSpace for communicators of all sorts as well as some of the highlights of Sarah's own custom-made show.

Meeting will be at 1 pm Eastern / 10 am Pacific on Aug. 12, 2024. Register and get connection details here

Culturally Inclusive Planetary Engagement Workshop

Date: September 24-26, 2024

Apply for a Culturally Inclusive Planetary Engagement Workshop for planetary scientists and astrobiologists hosted by the NASA Science Activation Planetary REACH team. These workshops aim to enhance the ability of the planetary science community to engage Black and Latinx youth and their families. During the three-day workshops, participants engage with local educators to discuss and model strategies for engaging Black and Latinx communities in planetary science and then use their newly gained knowledge to co-create STEM engagement activities with local youth-serving organizations. The next workshop is September 24 – 26, 2024 in Los Angeles, CA. Applications are due Aug. 31. Graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, engineers, and technicians are also eligible.

Please see this site for application details.

Stipends are available for those who qualify.
