The rewilding of Debbie Lawrence

We are enjoying having such a diverse range of work in the arches for Atelier OPEN, and listening to our visitors choosing their favourite pieces.

We have three paintings by Brighton-based Debbie Lawrence in the show. They were made during lockdown when, like so many, Debbie explored inner landscapes through her creative practice.

“I disappeared into my own silence in lockdown” she says. “I describe this experience as a rewilding of myself, just as the natural world around me was rewilding itself. I observed the landscapes around me: overgrown flora & fauna, long grasses, trays of veggie seedlings. I swam in the sea daily and floated on my back taking deep breaths… It is this healing power of nature and the restoring property of water which interests me. I explore this along with the feelings of solitude, immersion, peace and joy within my paintings.

Come and see Debbie’s paintings for yourself at Atelier OPEN, or visit the exhibition website. There is just a fortnight left to visit the show.

Coming soon to Atelier

“Working in a medium that is reduced to just 2 colors, black-and-white, makes it critical to have a clear idea of what you want to say and cut out the rest of the bullshit. There is no room for it in print. Thick bold lines demand attention. I’ve found them to be profoundly useful.”

Self-taught anarchist printmaker Ysidro Pergamino’s debut exhibition is at ABTS in September. Watch this space.

Annabet Wyndham

We love the work of local jeweller and a silversmith Annabet Wyndham and we’re delighted to have a selection of new pieces in our gallery shop.

Her delicate constructions of overlapping elements are inspired by still life painting, especially those by William Scott. Polished and oxidised silver is layered with bright flashes of enamel, each piece made unique by the subtle variations in the the glassy, jewel-toned surfaces.

The Beehive Art Club

Our third arch here at Atelier Beside the Sea is home to the Beehive Art Club - a community art group that supports those who have suffered from bereavement and isolation during the pandemic.

It’s a chance for group members to explore their creativity and learn new skills. One regular member said "I like the opportunity to make art and make new friends. I find this is one of the few things in the week that can make me leave the house when feeling down and overwhelmed. The level of art tutorship is fantastic."

Find out more about Beehive, come to our open day and help keep the Beehive buzzing!
