AT&T has shared the results of its initial investigation into yesterday's service outage that affected many of its customers across the U.S.

An AT&T service outage that impacted a huge number of its customers across the U.S. on Thursday was not caused by a cyberattack, the company’s initial investigation has revealed. Instead, the cellular and internet outages were the fault of work that it was carrying out on its systems, AT&T said in a message posted on its website on Thursday evening. “Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyberattack,” the company said in the message, adding, “We are continuing our assessment of [Thursday's] outage to ensure we keep delivering the service that our customers deserve” ... |

Texas-based Intuitive Machines made history on Thursday when its Odysseus lander successfully performed a soft landing on the lunar surface. The achievement marks America’s first soft landing there since Apollo 17 in 1972 and the first landing on the moon by a commercial entity. The landing took place on the moon’s south pole, an area of particular scientific interest as it hosts water ice and is the region where NASA plans to land astronauts under its Artemis program. Odysseus is carrying a dozen science and technology payloads as part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which provides contracts to companies for lunar services. NASA chief Bill Nelson said the landing marked "a new adventure in science, innovation, and American leadership in space" ... |

Cybersecurity software provider Avast has been hit with a $16.5 million fine by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in relation to charges that it sold customer data to third parties after promising that its products would protect them from online tracking. The FTC said Avast gathered users' web browsing information through its antivirus software and browser for at least six years until 2020. Collected data included web activity that sometimes revealed users' "religious beliefs, health concerns, political leanings, location, financial status, visits to child-directed content, and interest in prurient content." The FTC alleged that Avast then sold the data to third parties without customers' knowledge. Avast said that while it disagreed with the FTC's allegations and its "characterization of the facts," it was "pleased to resolve this matter" and remains "committed to our mission of protecting and empowering people's digital lives"... |
