Introducing a new making space for Brighton

We have been busy this spring stripping back and renovating 3 historic arches in the middle of Brighton beach to create a beautiful large new creative space. This Friday we open to the public…

Weʼve learnt over the last 18 months how important art and making is to people, we hope Atelier Beside the Sea will become the destination that encourages and inspires creating of all kinds.

The 3 arches will comprise:

GALLERIES - Our 2 galleries will be spaces for surprising, fresh and original contemporary art, craft and design. A national and international programme of exhibitions is currently being put together.

SHOP - The shop will specialise in beautiful and practical handmade work and highlight the individual makers and their processes. There will be a carefully curated selection of ceramics, textiles, jewellery, print, painting and sculpture from Atelier 51ʼs designer-makers alongside other outstanding artists, craftspeople and designers from Sussex, and across the world.

MAKE - The teaching and community programme will create and run varied classes for all levels. From porcelain paperclay, wood carving and jewellery making, to sustainable fashion design and drawing on the beach, there will be something to inspire everyone.

HIRE - The arches will be available to hire for community events and by local artists and makers, corporate meetings, events and product launches.

PREVIEW EVENINGS: Due to Covid restrictions we can’t have a big party to celebrate the opening of the venture but we’re planning a series of covid safe, more intimate timed previews where members of the team will give personal tours of the workshop, galleries and shop and talk about our plans. In order to control number we’re asking guests to book a slot (we’re asking for a contribution to our community fund to run art classes for underserved communities)

Our FIRST EXHIBITION in Gallery 2 is Undersea Overland and features four artists John Dilnot, Becky Blair, Jo Riddell and Katie Mawson.

ATELIER MAKERS MARKET - on Sunday the 4th July we’re running the first of an indoor market for between 20 and 30 makers in all 3 of the arches. Original contemporary craft from local makers. 10am to 5pm

ATELIER PECHA KUCHA - on 7th July we’re planning a Pecha Kucha evening of talks and pictures. Due to Covid numbers will be limited to 20 but the talks will be broadcast on IGTV too. Details to follow.
