| | | | | | | | | | Lot 350 Unidentified daguerreotypist Émile Zola aged 4 - 1844 Daguerreotype in his original wooden frame carved and gilded | | | | Artcurial is proud to present an exceptional photography collection by Émile Zola, the acclaimed writer and exponent of French naturalism. The photographs will be made available via auction.
Although Zola is internationally renowned for his significant humanistic achievement with the article J’accuse published during the Dreyfus affair, his activity as an amateur photographer is lesser known to the general public. He practiced photography enthusiastically, alongside his established literary career and towards the end of his life (from 1894 – 1902).
Zola was befriended with great photographers of the time (Nadar, Carjat, Pierre Petit) and he was first inspired to take up photography whilst holidaying in Royan during the 1888 summer. A few years later, he immersed himself in what was to become a real passion. He purchased many cameras, and set up several photographic darkrooms in his numerous residences. He photographed his daily family and working life, but also his friends, his dogs, the bike rides, his travels abroad, his exile in England and even the Universal Exhibition of 1900. | | | | | | Lot 329 Émile Zola (1840-1902) Denise and Jacques - 1898 or 1899 Portrait.
