| | | | | | | | | | Lot 2006 William Klein New York 1928 – lives in Paris „Man + leopard shorts Beach“. 1979 Dye destruction print, 1984. 47,8 × 31 cm (50,6 × 40,8 cm) (18 ⅞ × 12 ¼ in. (19 ⅞ × 16 ⅛ in.)) EUR 1.000–1.500 USD 1,230–1,850 | | | | | On Wednesday, May 30th, more than 200 lot numbers of modern and contemporary photographs will be auctioned at Grisebach in Berlin. The highlight lot of the auction is a vintage print by László Moholy-Nagy. The photogram, created during his time at the Bauhaus Weimar around 1923/25, captivates through a picture-filling arrangement of various overlapping objects. Moholy-Nagy masterfully handles the contrast of materiality and transparency. Similar to an X-ray photograph, the objects appear flooded with light, forming sharp contours and then blurring again. In a most poetic way, he combines the principle of avant-garde collage with the technique of a painterly drawing in this precious unique piece. (EUR 300,000 / 500,000). | | | | | | Lot 2023 Peter Beard New York 1938 – lives in New York & Kenya „I‘ll write whenever I can...“. 1965 Later gelatin silver print. With original drawings by Kivoi Mathenge in India ink, pencil, watercolour and tempera. 33,6 × 49 cm (40,5 × 50,2 cm) (13 ¼ × 19 ¼ in. (16 × 19 ¾ in.)) EUR 30.000–40.000 USD 36,900–49,200 | | | | | Like no other, Frantisek Drtikol coined erotic photography. Drtikol is one of the most important representatives of the Czech avant-garde alongside Jaromir Funke and Jaroslav Rössler. In the present atmospheric pigment print, he shows his model in a cleverly illuminated expressionistic stage architecture. Through this staging, the naked body and the associated shadow seem to separate from each other, there is a dance of seduction between light and shadow. (EUR 40,000 / 60,000). In Africa, Peter Beard found the central theme of his life. In addition to two other unique pieces, the "Ahmed Diptych" will be auctioned off with original frame drawings by an African artist. Man's and civilization's threat to natural wildlife is expressed here, reflecting Beard's own tornness between tenderness and concern for a threatened world (EUR 50,000 / 70,000). Together with other photo-avant-garde artists, Otto Steinert developed a new, experimental pictorial aesthetic within "subjective photography" that understood the individual image idea as a contrast to the mere depiction and documentation of the visible. The present recording "Two Soldiers" can serve as an example for this "New Vision". The vintage print is one of two existing prints, of which a print is kept in the Photographic Collection of Museum Folkwang, Essen. (EUR 20,000 / 30,000). Impressive landscape and architectural photographs are by Albert Renger-Patzsch. From the direct estate of the architect Fritz Schupp three vintage prints come to auction, under which "Gas and Electricity" in its size and fine tonality represents the clarity and magic of Renger-Patzsch's imagery particularly impressive. (EUR 5,000 / 7,000). | | | | | | Lot 2052 Lillian Bassman 1917 – New York – 2012 „Harper‘s Bazaar March 1950, Barbara Mullen“. Gelatin silver print, 1992. Agfa paper. 36,5 × 28,2 cm (50,3 × 40,3 cm) (14 ⅜ × 11 ⅛ in. (19 ¾ × 15 ⅞ in.)) EUR 8.000–10.000 USD 9,840–12,300 | | | | | In addition to two portraits by Lilian Bassman, a series of prints by Horst P. Horst, Walde Huth and William Klein provide an overview of decades of fashion photography. The "pioneer" (EUR 3,000 / 5,000) by the Russian constructivist Alexander Rodchenko is also one of the highlights of modern photography as well as Berenice Abbott's "Water Front: From the Roof of Irving Trust Co. Building, Manhattan" (EUR 7,000 / 9,000) or Iwao Yamawakis "Facade" (EUR 4,000 / 6,000). Examples of contemporary photographs are by William Eggleston, Tod Papageorge, David LaChapelle, Cindy Sherman, Tom Wood, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Thomas Ruff, Robert Mapplethorpe and many others. | | | | | | Lot 2000 Pierre Boucher Paris 1908 – 2000 Faremoutiers Saut de Janine, Ermenonville. 1937 Later gelatin silver print.
