6 000 / 8 000 € | | | | | | | A rare and exceptional half plate daguerreotype, representing a self-portrait of the 19th century photographers Charles Choiselat and Stanislas Ratel standing behind a group of unidentified men taken around 1843-1845. The scene is particularly interesting due to the animated interactions of the men: they are either smoking, playing cards, reading a newspaper, standing, sitting, looking out at us or at each other… We are inclined to believe these men are close friends of the photographers and are perhaps also photographers themselves. The scene includes a phantom figure of a woman, perhaps a servant, that was asked to step into the picture but quickly stepped out. We can see a chair turned over from the movement. Charles Choiselat and Stanislas Ratel are known for their panoramic daguerreotypes of French monuments and landscapes and took very few portraits.
