HIGHLIGHT-AUCTION

'SCHOOLS OF DESIGN'

5 December

From Aagaard Andersen to Van de Velde: the highlight auction 'Schools of Design' features famous names and designs as well as rare unique pieces!

The first third of this year's 'Schools of Design' auction is dominated by arts and crafts. In addition to a series of exceptional marqueterie vases by French glass genius Emile Gallé, it is above all the rare works by Viennese Gustav Gurschner that stand out. Influenced by French Art Nouveau, which he had become acquainted with during his stay in Paris, he designed a wonderful table light around 1900; its base is formed in the shape of a young woman growing out of a leaf. The pointed light bulb grows out of the corresponding flower (estimate EUR 6,500 - 7,500). More ornamental, but just as typical of Art Nouveau, is the pair of condiment dishes with the famous "whiplash" decor by Belgian all-rounder Henry van de Velde. Due to their rarity, the small vessels are valued at EUR 15,000 - 20,000.

Two lighting artists in the spotlight
As a Munich-based auction house, we are particularly pleased to dedicate a chapter to Munich lighting designer Ingo Maurer. In addition to the popular 'Uchiwa' series (estimate EUR 1,800 - 3,500), we offer even more extraordinary luminaires by the designer: In 2006, Ingo Maurer and his team designed the premises of the Brussels Atomium with large, UFO-like luminaires that were still part of the furnishings there until 2022. The two 'YUU 200' ceiling lights - each two meters in diameter - will enter the race with an estimated price of EUR 25,000 - 35,000.

Danish plastic design
It is rare to find such items as the seating object 'Portrait of My Mother's Chesterfield’ 1964 by Gunnar Aagaard Andersen on the market. Its first-class provenance - the armchair comes from the artist's estate - makes the piece all the more interesting. The estimate for the foam object, which was painted black by the artist and is present in many a museum collection, is EUR 40,000 - 60,000.

Alchimia and Memphis - colorful and unconventional
Works by Ettore Sottsass are still in high demand. The offer includes ceramics and lighting as well as larger and rarer designs, such as the 'Factotum' shelf from 1979/80 in the well-known Memphis style with polychrome laminates, its estimated price being EUR 9,000 - 16,000. Even rarer is the 'Shelf No. 4', 1994, from an edition by Galerie Mourmans, Maastricht. In 1994, Sottsass designed several furniture models for their editions, which were limited to six pieces each. Some of these have already been successfully auctioned on the international market. Shelf no. 4, which has never been offered at auction before, is expected to change hands for an estimated EUR 38,000 - 42,000.
