Tom Schmelzer (born 1966) studied New Media at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, in parallel to medicine and philosophy and holds a PhD in Neuroscience. The Munich-based artist discovered many themes of his art while traveling. To finance his travels, he worked in a factory, as a ghostwriter and silver smuggler. Tom Schmelzer is a conceptual artist. Based on scientific observations, he designs objects, installations, paintings and also incorporates digital media. With analytical precision, Schmelzer takes a close look at pressing issues of our time. Social clichés, communication techniques, the extinction of species and our handling of material and emotional values. In realizing his ideas, Schmelzer draws on the latest technologies as well as traditional craftsmanship. His works are technically perfectly executed and of the highest intellectual presence. The work 'shit it's now again' from 2019 focuses on provocation in the guise of pop culture. Instead of juicy beef, a stuffed toad lies between the halves of a roll, thus spoiling our appetite. For Tom Schmelzer, the value of a work of art is not measured by its price, but by the intensity of its communication. Critics say he managed to give his works a point of view. Which is a lot, in a world of arbitrariness. His works are represented in numerous private collections in Europe and the USA.
