Where NOLA Eats

Greetings, New Orleans food fans! This week, we visit the newly reopened beer mecca, Avenue Pub. An acclaimed Indian restaurant steps into an upscale new home. Ian McNulty created a menu fit for a king (or a French president).  Chick-fil-A is expanding into New Orleans, and festive Réveillon dinners are underway. And check out these recipes for holiday treats from Liz Faul: gingerbread cake, snowball cookies and granola.

1. The beer is here.

The Avenue Pub is back with a focus on local beer, after a change in ownership and a renovation. On our visit we admired a whimsical addition, fitting for the St. Charles Avenue spot.

2. On the road again?

Punjabi Dhaba is a first-class Indian restaurant with a regional culinary focus —  located inside a gas station by a truck stop. Now it has a sleek new home in Kenner, the latest chapter in a surprising, transcontinental story.

3. Wait! There's more.

There was great excitement in La Nouvelle-Orléans last week when French president Emmanuel Macron visited us: Ian McNulty recommended this special restaurant tour. Decidedly on the other end of the gastronomic spectrum, Chick-fil-A is opening three locations in New Orleans. And make reservations early for festive Réveillon dinners in December.

4. Lovin' from the oven.

Neighbors and friends will welcome you with open arms when you turn up on their doorstep with fragrant gingerbread cake or powdered-sugar cookies. Get Liz Faul's recipes here.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans, the food news never stops. Keep up with all the inside info on Where NOLA Eats.

What to cook

Home-baked snowball cookies, gingerbread cake and granola make for festive holiday gifting

A few days ago, an old friend of mine wrote to me to ask for my gingerbread cake recipe. I had not made the cake in years, but as soon as she reminded me of it, I was brought back in time to when my children were young in our kitchen in Lafayette. I remembered the taste of the warm spice in the cake and how I would buy molasses in the winter to make it for my kids and their friends. Read more
