Back in the win column

Good morning, folks. Welcome to the Tuesday, Nov. 12 edition of the Saints Insider newsletter and for the first time since the Sept. 16 edition, we can write about a win. How about that? Let's get into it:

Stickler for details

I really, really enjoyed our Rod Walker's column on interim coach Darren Rizzi, and how he helped snap the Saints' seven-game losing streak.

"Rizzi — a stickler for details — might give you more details than you asked for, which was the case Sunday when he talked about the hours leading up to his first game as interim coach of the New Orleans Saints," Waker wrote.

By now, you've probably heard of Rizzi's toilet anecdote. But you should still read Rod's column anyway. It provides great insight into what makes Rizzi, Rizzi. (And for even more insight, you should also read Luke Johnson's feature from Friday on Rizzi, too.)

For the city

I know this isn't an LSU or a Pelicans newsletter — which yikes, what an awful start the Pels are having — but I thought our Jeff Duncan put into perspective just what a Saints win meant for the city.

Just look at what Dunc' pointed out:

As bad as the Saints’ start has been, the Pelicans’ 3-7 start might be even more discouraging. A bewildering spree of injuries to Zion Wiliamson, Dejounte Murray, CJ McCollum, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy and Jordan Hawkins has left fans disillusioned and discouraged.

Combined, the Saints-Pelicans’ 6-14 start ranks among the worst for the sister franchises in the past two decades. Only the 5-15 starts to the 2015 and 2016 seasons were worse.

LSU’s demoralizing 42-13 loss to Alabama on Saturday didn’t help matters."

Even Derek Carr admitted it was a long seven weeks between wins.

Quick hitters

Here's what else is going on around the Saints:

  • Erik McCoy's return is near
  • Jameis Winston is also returning to the Superdome, albeit as an opponent.
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling is tall, fast and the speed threat the Saints were missing
  • Why the Saints named Alvin Kamara a captain

Anyway, that's all for now. Make sure to check out our podcast and content throughout the week.. Thanks for reading as always.

Take care,

Matthew Paras
