AdLit Beat: All About Adolescent Literacy

August 2022

Do you remember when summer felt like a happy eternity? It's the time of year when, as Ralph Waldo Emerson writes, you should, “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.” As an adult, summers seem considerably tamer and much shorter. Perhaps that's intentional, so the acclimation back to work isn't as painful when a new school year begins.

As you return to your classrooms, I hope you will take a moment to check out the new resources we've created to engage your students and support your literacy instruction. A few are highlighted below but there are many more that will be featured on AdLit.org's home page and on our Twitter and Facebook pages. I hope you'll try a few out and let us know how it goes.

In the Classroom: Unlocking the Past

Are your students passionately curious about history? Our revamped 'Unlocking the Past' page includes a variety of resources to develop students' enjoyment and appreciation of history while reading and writing.

We have created new author interviews, themed book lists and additional resources to support your instruction.

Using her broad scope of teaching both middle and high school students, our new AdLit blogger, Jamie Marsh, will show you how to squeeze literacy skills into any lesson across curricular areas.

Literacy Focused From the Start
In this edition, Jamie shares how to easily create thoughtful content-rich material with a literacy focus within the first few weeks of school.

For the Love of Reading:
Interview with Donna Barba Higuera

Donna Higuera's characters tackle more than just the bizarre things that happen to them in their lives. Listen as Donna talks about how she developed The Last Cuentista from a fairytale to a sci-fi adventure.
