Happy Juneteenth! Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is the annual commemoration the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865 and a celebration of Black pride and resilience, filled with rich food traditions. It is also a moment for reflection in the ongoing fight for racial justice, and a time of action in the movement for Black lives, with virtual and in-person uprisings and events taking place across the country and Bay Area.
Tomorrow, CUESA will be joining Bakers Against Racism, a movementof bakers across the country condemning racism and raising funds for organizations that support Black lives, with a bake sale at our Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. In the south driveway, a guest tent of home bakers will be selling a variety of freshly baked desserts and pastries, with all proceeds being donated to Black-led organizations likeBlack Earths Farms, East Oakland Grocery Cooperative, Peopleā€™s Breakfast Oakland, and more. CUESA and the professional bakers in our market are making donations to San Francisco-based organizations that serve Black youth and families, including3rd Street Youth, Collective Impact, Rafiki Coalition, and Youth Community Developers. Visit each baker's tent for more information.
While Bakers Against Racism is a gesture of support in the movement for Black lives, we encourage you to learn about and follow these Black-led organizations who are on the frontlines leading this work, and donate or volunteer directly to make a greater impact.
