Happy Juneteenth! Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is the annual commemoration the abolition of slavery in the United States in 1865 and a celebration of Black pride and resilience, filled with rich food traditions. It is also a moment for reflection in the ongoing fight for racial justice, and a time of action in the movement for Black lives, with virtual and in-person uprisings and events taking place across the country and Bay Area.

Tomorrow, CUESA will be joining Bakers Against Racism, a movementof bakers across the country condemning racism and raising funds for organizations that support Black lives, with a bake sale at our Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. In the south driveway, a guest tent of home bakers will be selling a variety of freshly baked desserts and pastries, with all proceeds being donated to Black-led organizations likeBlack Earths Farms, East Oakland Grocery Cooperative, People’s Breakfast Oakland, and more. CUESA and the professional bakers in our market are making donations to San Francisco-based organizations that serve Black youth and families, including3rd Street Youth, Collective Impact, Rafiki Coalition, and Youth Community Developers. While Bakers Against Racism is a gesture of support in the movement for Black lives, we encourage you to learn about and follow these Black-led organizations who are on the frontlines leading this work, and donate or volunteer directly to make a greater impact.
