With new comic book and cake shops, Bangor’s Hammond Street is seeing a business shuffle

• Bangor's Hammond Street will see a retailer depart this month, but its space won't stay empty for long. A new cake shop will join a new comic book shop nearby. And that retailer is departing for a bigger space on Broadway.

• Steven K. Allard, 56, of South Hampton, New Hampshire, and his wife, Tiffany, were heading toward Rockwood Cottages after snowmobiling together on two separate machines about 9 p.m. Sunday when Allard broke through the ice near the mouth of the Moose River on the west side of the lake.

• Throughout the 1940s, local insurance man and photographer Richard Bell chronicled the hard-working volunteers building Titcomb Mountain, a ski slope just outside of town. Then, at some point, the pictures went into storage. That’s where they remained until they were discovered again last year.

• Grand Lake is renowned for its picturesque beauty, but its isolation poses unique challenges for those needing urgent medical care. To help meet that need, LifeFlight of Maine has partnered with the town of Danforth to develop a landing pad for its emergency helicopters near the public boat launch at Greenland Cove campgrounds.

• The Maine Guide Fly Shop has been a fixture on Route 15 in downtown Greenville for decades, and caters to fly fishers who flock to the region’s ponds, rivers and streams.

• The longtime president of the Bangor-area electric utility was a down-to-earth leader who valued face-to-face communication with everyone in the company — be they members of the board of directors or lineworkers, said his son.

• Jim Rice, a Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame left fielder who serves as a baseball analyst on the New England Sports Network, will replace Alex Cora on Thursday, Jan. 30, as the featured guest at the annual 92.9 FM The Ticket Hot Stove Banquet.
