Bangor teacher faces backlash after lesson on race, privilege is shared to pro-Trump Facebook page

  • The parent’s sharing of the video to the Facebook group -- a violation of school department policy -- and the “hateful comments and vitriol targeted at the teacher have unsettled many,” Superintendent Betsy Webb said Monday in an email to parents. She called for “support and kindness” as the city’s teachers deliver the new training and start a school year during which they’re teaching both online and in person.
  • Amy Albert opened Replay Sports in Old Town two years ago with a dream of a local shop where families could buy used gear for their kids at affordable prices. Now, the consignment store is about to close for good -- and in doing so, it joins a growing list of Maine’s small businesses that have collapsed under the weight of the coronavirus pandemic this year.

  • Nearly four years after Maine voters legalized recreational marijuana, the state office overseeing the market’s launch said Tuesday it has approved the first six active licenses for adult-use marijuana establishments.
Cost of doing nothing climate analysis predicts 15 percent hit to Maine economies by 2050 
  • Maine’s economic output could decrease by 15 percent in the next 30 years if the state does not take action to address climate change, according to a new analysis prepared for the Maine Climate Council.  That plan will serve as a blueprint lawmakers can use to meet Maine’s energy goals, which include having a carbon-neutral economy by 2045 and getting 100 percent of electricity from renewable resources while cutting emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
