Beethoven, Ludwig van | Three Quartets for Pianoforte, Violin, Viola and Violoncello WoO 36 | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Miucci, Leonardo | BA 9037 | EUR 48.95 | Score with parts | 9790006567270 | When Beethoven wrote these three quartets he was 15 years old and a composition student of Christian Gottlob Neefe in Bonn. They reveal a strong Mozartian influence while the brilliant piano writing already gives a sense of the mature Beethoven. He may conceivably have written the works for the wealthy Mastiaux family in Bonn, as he gave piano lessons to one of the daughters and the other three siblings played violin, viola and violoncello.
The sole source for the quartets is the autograph score which contains many overwritings that shed light on the work's original conception and possible alternative readings. Although Beethoven never published the pieces in his lifetime and is not known to have performed them, he reused their melodic and thematic material in later compositions.
Beethoven preserved the autograph score to the end of his days; perhaps an indication that the quartets meant a great deal to him. The first edition was published by Artaria in Vienna one year after his death, albeit with the pieces in a different order and with many errors in the musical text.
Barenreiter's scholarly performing edition of the Piano Quartets WoO 36 is edited by the Italian pianist Leonardo Miucci, a specialist in the performance practice of keyboard music from this period. The edition not only presents the correct readings, it also sheds light on the young Beethoven's expressive notation and provides a plausible explanation for the distinction he made between dots and strokes to indicate staccato. |

Haydn, Joseph | Symphony in B-flat major Hob. I:77 | Editors: Gerlach, Sonja / Murray, Sterling E. | BA 10986 | EUR 42.95 | Full score | 9790006569106 | Haydn composed his Symphony No. 77 along with his Symphonies Nos. 76 and 78 for a planned journey to England that never took place. Nonetheless, H.C. Robbins Landon calls these works the "English symphonies" as they are stylistically closely linked to the "London Bach", Johann Christian Bach. Haydn himself, in a letter of 1783 to his Parisian publisher Charles-Georges Boyer, described the symphonies as "Leicht und nicht vil Concertirend", meaning that they were light in spirit and did not contain extensive solo passages but rather a clear sense of classical form.
Continuing the cooperation between Barenreiter and the G. Henle publisher regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies, this edition is based on the G. Henle Complete Edition of the "Works of Joseph Haydn". | | BA 10986-74 | Violin I | EUR 10.95 | Minimum order quantity: 4 copies |

The arranger and editor Hans Vainikainen heads Stockholm’s Katarinakorerna with more than 500 singers in various combinations. Their programmes cover both sacred and secular music. In his search for suitable arrangements, his eye fell on one the world’s best-known pop artists, the late Tim Bergling, known professionally as Avicii. He then arranged three of Avicii’s best songs for classical choirs, intending them to be encore pieces.
“Hey Brother”, “Levels” and “Without you” are now available for six-part mixed or female choir. The arrangements offer a wide variety of vocal and choral possibilities and attention has been paid that all parts are of the same musical standard. Whether homophonic or unisono, they artfully intertwine from one passage to the next. However, for all their sophistication the arrangements remain manageable and easy to learn, displaying the typical groove of each Avicii song within a multi-layered texture. |

Whether sung by female or mixed choirs, the fanfare-like theme is equally powerful and will keep the audience tapping their feet. |

Ravel, Maurice | Tzigane | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Woodfull-Harris, Douglas | BA 8849-90 | EUR 18.95 | Version for violin and piano; also serves as piano reduction to the orchestral version | 9790006541553 | In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D'Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D'Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel's virtuoso classic "Tzigane".
This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel's masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer's earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition; one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of "Tzigane" from the estate of Jelly D'Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection.
The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D'Aranyi. D'Aranyi's alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. | | | BA 8849-74 | Violin I | EUR 7.50 | Minimum order quantity: 4 copies |

High-quality Urtext edition based on the "Complete Works of Gabriel Faure”

Faure, Gabriel | Trio for Piano, Violin and Violoncello op. 120 N 194 | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Sobaskie, James William | BA 7902 | EUR 21.50 | Score with parts | 9790006539581 | Gabriel Faure's Piano Trio, his penultimate work, was composed in 1922-23 and published in June 1923. The three-movement work clearly shows Faure's ability to combine a transparent texture with charming and elegant themes.
Until now the composition has always presented musicians with considerable problems as the score offers conflicting readings when compared with the separate string parts. Without reliable information on the different readings, important basic information for an appropriate interpretation of the work has been lacking.
Barenreiter's first ever critical edition of this masterpiece finally unites the parts with the score. All variants appear in the critical commentary to the corresponding complete edition volume of the "Complete Works of Gabriel Faure".

Martinu, Bohuslav | Concerto da Camera H 285 / Rhapsody-Concerto H 337 | The Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition III/1/8 Editors: Bergmannova, Sandra / Brezina, Ales / Silverthorne, Paul / Zichova, Jitka / Zurek, Pavel | BA 10578-01 | EUR 276.00 | Linen-bound full score | 9790260109056 | Reduced subscription price available | The two concertos contained in this volume represent two different stylistic periods within Martinu's work. The "Concerto da Camera" (1941) is the last of his works inspired by the Baroque concerto grosso. The "Rhapsody-Concerto", composed eleven years later (1952), was the first work of his so-called "fantasia period", marked by a more open sense of form and an expansion of tonality. The edition of the "Concerto da Camera" shows, for the first time, the extent of Martinu's modifications to the work since its composition and publication, particularly to the solo violin part. The edition of the "Rhapsody-Concerto" takes into account previously unknown contemporary performance materials which have recently been discovered.
This volume of the Bohuslav Martinu Complete Edition (BMCE) is based on a wealth of text and music sources, in particular autographs and contemporary copies that were recognized by the composer and early performers of the works, as well as some first editions produced under the supervision of Martinu. |

Handel, George Frideric | Il pastor fido HWV 8a Opera in three acts | Halle Handel Edition (HHA) II/5 Editor: Ograjensek, Suzana | BA 10714-01 | EUR 321.00 | Linen-bound full score | 9790006550241 | Reduced subscription price available | Handel's "ll pastor fido", HWV 8a, is the most modest of his Italian operas: With over half of its numbers drawing from musical material of earlier Italian cantatas, the work deliberately reflects the pastoral style of the Italian serenata. In order to capture the simplicity of this approach to form, Handel made use of several different techniques, such as a consistent use of high vocal registers, an abundance of monothematic da capo arias, and an overall prevalence of held-back arias.
"Il pastor fido" did not lend itself particularly well for an opera adaptation: Reducing the original text to the scale of an opera libretto posed an immense challenge. With drastic cuts, Handel's librettist Rossi condensed five acts with eighteen characters into three acts with only six roles. The libretto, "a paltry sketch of the complex original drama", was not well received. But Rossi had actually done his best to add a sense of coherence to the story while preserving at least some of Guarini's poetic language.
This "Halle Handel Edition" volume compares several sources that were not available for earlier editions. Amongst other things it presents the first modern edition of the complete overture, the complete stage instructions from the libretto, and an alternative ending for the duet of Mirtillo and Amarilli in the third act. |

Gluck, Christoph Willibald | Cythere assiegee Opera-ballet in three acts, Paris 1775 | Christoph Willibald Gluck. Complete Works IV/9 Editor: Philippi, Daniela | BA 5810-01 | EUR 586.00 | Linen-bound full score | 9790006495511 | Reduced subscription price available | For his Paris "Cythere assiegee", Gluck drew on his eponymous opera comique from 1759, transforming it into an opera-ballet. The libretto which was expanded by Charles Simon Favart was adapted: Gluck added recitative passages, reworked individual sections and also added his own compositions, modifying them in parts. By March 1775, the compositional work had progressed sufficiently for Gluck to leave behind a copy of the score as he departed from Paris. However, he was unable to supervise rehearsals or be present at the premiere (1 August 1775) or any of the subsequent 21 performances. Due to these particular circumstances, three versions of the work are to be distinguished: the original version, the performed version and the printed version.
This edition of "Cythere assiegee" contains the original version of the main part and is printed here for the first time. The reconstruction which was necessary in order to determine the original form of this opera draws on all orchestral parts, the printed score and with regard to a large gap in Act III, pages were taken from the score copy. The four-part appendix includes the changes made to this score copy, sections that deviate from the printed score as well as the final version of Act III, also from the printed score. The last part of the appendix also presents a Divertissement in six movements by Berton, which is only available as a rare contemporary set of printed parts.
The Foreword offers detailed information regarding the work's genesis, subject matter, preparations for performance and print, premiere, reception, and this edition. Selected pages from significant musical sources, the libretto of the premiere performance, and images illuminating the performance context, have been added as facsimiles. |

Gade, Niels Wilhelm | Cantatas | Niels W. Gade. Works IV/3 Editor: Hansen, Finn Egeland | BA 7622 | EUR 420.00 | Linen-bound full score | 9790006487790 | Reduced subscription price available | The four works presented in this volume, "Fruhlings-Phantasie" op. 23, "Fruhlings-Botschaft" op. 35, "Die heilige Nacht" op. 40 and "Beim Sonnenuntergang" op. 46, were composed between 1852 and 1870. All of these works belong to the "concert piece" genre, as the title pages of the respective first editions suggest.
The works' instrumentation is varied: While "Fruhlings-Botschaft" and "Beim Sonnenuntergang" are composed for mixed choir and orchestra, "Die heilige Nacht" calls for an additional solo alto. "Fruhlings-Phantasie" is not scored for choir at all, juxtaposing the orchestra with four solo voices and piano. Gade based his texts on poems by Edmund Lobedanz (op. 23), Emanuel Geibel (op. 35), August von Platen (op. 40) and Andreas Munch (op. 46). |

Kabelac, Miloslav | Four Preludes for Organ op. 48 | Critical Complete Edition of the Works of Miloslav Kabelac V/13 Editor: Hora, Jan | H 8022 | EUR 10.50 | 9790260108929 | The four small-scale Preludes op. 48 by Miloslav Kabelac were commissioned in 1966 by the second "Prague Spring International Music Competition" in the category organ.
They are written in proportional notation, which the composer preferred ever since his Symphony No. VI of 1961. For practical reasons one of the editors, the leading Czech organist and Kabelac authority Jan Hora, has transcribed the graphic notation of the note-values into standard notation. The original musical text appears in a complete reproduction of the first edition of 1966, along with examples in facsimile. |

Schlee, Thomas Daniel | Sursum chordis corda for piano op. 81a
BA 11051 | EUR 19.50 | 9790006525614 | Composer Daniel Schlee wrote about his piano piece “Sursum chordis corda”: “The third movement of my Second Symphony is titled “Sursum corda” – a liturgical call to lift up our hearts. This call is answered by joyfully flowing music. The piano version is neither a particella nor an intabulation in the traditional sense; it adapts the essential elements of the musical process, partially reinterpreting them to suit the wealth of possibilities the piano offers in terms of sound and technique. The scope of the work ranges from the impetus of emphatic chord progressions and carillon-like passages through to lyrical phrases.”

For composer Thomas Daniel Schlee, the “intimate sound possibilities of the string quartet” have the potential “to formulate an, albeit ‘only’ individual, solution to the somewhat forlorn condition of new art music within society that we are unfortunately experiencing today.”
Schlee’s Fourth String Quartet opens with a pure C major sound, out of which he develops a harmonically free band of voices: “The pure as a source, not pleasing”! After a melodically dominating episode and a continuation of the “swinging tone-motion from the beginning”, a thematically solidified section follows. It is met by a second, more extensive melodic episode, followed by a “nightly scene”. Coming full circle, the opening music of the piece finds its continuation, leading into a lament – first articulated by the ensemble, then finally as “the viola’s long, forlorn search for the melody symbolizing a farewell.”
