Beethoven, Ludwig van | Sonatas for Pianoforte and Violin Volume I and II, Special Set Price | BARENREITER URTEXT Editor: Brown, Clive | BA 9036 | EUR 74.00 | 9790006563784 | Not only does Clive Brown's scholarly critical edition offer a meticulously edited text and, for the first time, presents a list of sources and a Critical Report.
The new Barenreiter Urtext edition of Beethoven's Violin Sonatas takes a somewhat different approach towards the production of a source-critical edition than the conventional Urtext. Nineteenth-century composers viewed notation quite differently from 20th and 21st-century musicians. Much more was expected to be implicit in the notation, on the basis of well-understood performance conventions, than is the case today. Some signs, such as staccato marks, had multiple meanings, depending on context, and the absence of slurs did not necessarily indicate the absence of legato. Despite Beethoven's more extensive employment of performance markings than many of his contemporaries, he did not mark things with anything like the care expected of a modern editor and often failed to resolve ambiguities in copyists' scores and engravers' proofs.
This edition aims to provide much more guidance as to the performance implications of Beethoven's notation, both in the musical text, through editorial markings and Critical Report, and also in a Performing Practice Commentary. |

Dvorak, Antonin | Mass in D major op. 86 | BARENREITER URTEXT Utidjian, Haig | BA 10434 | EUR 19.95 | 9790260108523 | Dvorak composed the "Mass in D major" in 1887 at the suggestion of his patron Josef Hlavka for the inauguration of the Luany castle chapel. It is written for choir and organ with sporadic passages for soloists, uses simple expressive devices and makes light technical demands. Thus, this work is easy to perform, also by amateur church choirs; all that is needed is a small choir and the solo parts can be sung by members of the choir.
The full score includes additional violoncello and double bass parts edited for the first time. Dvorak had penned them himself in a transcription of the organ version.

| A musical description of nature
Text by Charles Anthony Silvestri
Featured on the Voces8 "After Silence" CD |
|
Jansson, Marten | An Elementary Elegy | Choral score | BA 8529 | EUR 4.95 | 9790006569939 | Minimum order quantity: 10 copies | "An Elemental Elegy" was commissioned by the internationally acclaimed ensemble Voces8 for their 15th anniversary recording project "After Silence". The CD was released in July 2020.
Marten Jansson says: "The ensemble wanted a work about the beauty and fragility of nature. I instantly turned to lyric poet Charles Anthony Silvestri and he, being as excited about the commission as I was, completed the inspirational poem "An Elemental Elegy" just three hours later:
Wildflowers spread across the hillside green; A single ash stands sentinel. Sparrows flit amid the lazy sway Of tall grass in the whispering wind.
Glassy water touched by dragonflies; Beneath, a flash of silver minnows; Deeper still lie the woods beyond, With many paths for wandering.
This idyll may soon be but a memory, As plans and progress shall advance. They burn the flowered hillside bare, Root up the signal ash, Drain the pond and pave the meadow And, greedy, eye the woods beyond.
Now the wildflowers grow through cobblestones, And sparrows nest among the chimney stacks. Profound the harm weve done to Her, and yet Nature, ever-changing, elemental, finds a way.
I found it extremely inspiring to set these verses which are about the beauty of nature, its endangerment by man and the belief that it will recover from our interferences, to music. In the first place my music aims to enhance the meaning of the words. |
