In 1822 he became the first professor of cello at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he remained until his retirement in 1851. Lindley, an esteemed and much sought-after teacher, wrote not only the present Capriccios but also a cello method, several concertos, and chamber music in which the cello is prominently featured.
The "Capriccios and Exercises" contain a multitude of fingering patterns in related major and minor harmonies, exercises for the thumb position and many passages of double stops, all within a melodious framework. Working together with the International Mozarteum Foundation in Salzburg, Barenreiter now presents a new edition of this work, reflecting the cutting edge of scholarship while doing justice to the needs of performers.
High scholarly standards, the completion and reconstruction of movements: this pioneering publication incorporates all this in order to come as close as possible to the work itself: - The Kyrie and Gloria, both of which survived complete in Mozart's autograph, are edited in accordance with scholarly standards. - The first two sections of the Credo have been meticulously completed by the editor Ulrich Leisinger, drawing on original Mozart compositions, e.g. the aria "Deh vieni non tardar" from "The Marriage of Figaro" and paying attention to a stylistically appropriate and transparent sound. - The Sanctus and Benedictus (with the Hosanna), which are either incomplete or survive only in secondary sources, have been reconstructed by the editor.

Nathalie Berton-Blivet's new edition is based primarily on the performance material used at the Opera between 1748 and 1781 and for the revival at Fontainebleau in October 1754.
This later version, the one Rameau considered final, is reconstructed in the volume of the complete edition Opera omnia Rameau (OOR). Francois Saint-Yves has prepared a new keyboard reduction from this version. The vocal score also contains an Introduction in French and English. |

Before Beethoven penned a more concise finale, the Grande Fugue concluded his String Quartet in B-flat major op. 130, a remarkable work in every sense of the word and one of the boldest of its time. With its six movements, it defies traditional form and today, it is regarded as a pinnacle among Beethoven's late string quartets.
After the composer's death, the original manuscript suffered a strange fate. It was separated into movements and distributed to different owners.
The parts of the autograph strewn across libraries in Europe and the United States have now been reunited in this facsimile edition for the first time in over 190 years.
The facsimile is rendered in high-quality colour printing, reproducing the autograph in such detail that Beethoven's correction process where he pasted over previous entries becomes evident. In 1717 Telemann composed the music to be used between Trinity Sunday and the end of the church year, in 1720/21 those meant for the first half of the church year. The edited pieces include compositions from both phases: those written for the final Sundays of the 1717 church year as well as those from the first Sunday of Advent until the third Christmas day of 1720/21.
The sacred pieces are introduced by a four-part dictum, followed by alternating arias and recitatives, and concluded by a chorale verse. The magnificently constructed introductory tutti movements are characterized by prima practica polyphony and the arias contain rich word painting to describe the emotions, while Telemann's instrumentation shows a carefully directed use of color. Another distinguishing mark of this cycle is the rich and expressive harmony of each individual composition.
An instructive Foreword includes information on the complex genesis and the characteristics of the cycle. The Critical Commentary analyses and describes the works' sources and history. Both parts constitute a collection of vocal pieces in a broad range of styles written for only a few voices with basso continuo. Most of the texts are in German, but some are also in Latin. The first volume presents a broad spectrum of vocal scoring, musical forms and texts: there are solo concertos in the Italian style, traditional four-part motets, well-known Psalm texts set to music, hymns as well as mystically contemplative meditative literature. The concertos' monodic qualities and high level of virtuosity - especially in the compositions with German text - made Schutz a household name shortly after the "Kleine geistliche Konzerte" were published in print. As the works required no large ensembles, they could be performed for different occasions and in various locations; particularly during the Thirty Years' War they could be heard at court, in cities or in villages but also in schools or at home.
Unlike the 1963 edition of the "Kleine geistliche Konzerte" (BA 3664, BA 3665, BA 3666) as part of the New Schutz Edition, this new volume presents the works for the first time in their original form and order. A historic-critical evaluation of all relevant sources yields new information regarding the composer's intentions, the printing process and the works' reception. Furthermore, the edition includes a reconstruction of an earlier version that has not been published until now. This edition is geared towards musicologists, as well as professional musicians and amateurs with a keen interest in early music. |
