Its four thematically related movements are played one after the other without interruption. The work was composed between January and April 1828, the year of Schubert's death. It is dedicated to his student Karoline von Esterházy, with whom he is said to have had an unhappy love affair. Schubert did not live to see the publication of the fantasy in March 1829 by A. Diabelli & Co. in Vienna.

In "Glistening moon in the velvet sky" from Act 1 of the opera, some small changes were also made to the Czech vocal text based on Dvorák's autograph.
A new piano reduction by Petr Koronthály largely adapts the excellent and well-manageable piano part that Antonín Dvorák is known to have contributed to and authorised. |

Théodore Dubois (1837–1924) was a conductor, organist, teacher, and one of the leading Parisian composers of the 19th century. His contemporaries frequently compared him to Delibes, Widor and Lalo.
