As expected, losing two straight games and this past weekend's series to Mississippi State cost the LSU baseball team in the polls. Though the sky hasn't fallen quite as much for the Tigers as some Tiger fans might think. LSU (39-12, 17-9 SEC) dropped to No. 4 and No. 5 in the major polls on Monday. LSU also slipped to a No. 5 national seed in the NCAA Tournament projections by our Patrick Magee. Slipped, but still a national seed. While LSU's bullpen looks like brush fire, the Tigers still have a chance to stabilize their season if they can start getting some outs again from players not named Paul Skenes (or, under the right circumstances, Ty Floyd). Speaking of Skenes, despite the lost weekend he and LSU third baseman Tommy White earned national player of the week honors. Good for them, but I'm sure both of them would give the awards back for a win or two against the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs' upsets of LSU on Saturday and Sunday after Skenes pitched the Tigers to a 12-1 series opening win Friday did not go unnoticed in Las Vegas (they're watching everything. Hello there, Vegas). The Tigers also are no longer the favorite to win the College World Series. Click here to see where LSU ranks in the odds to win the national championship now (hint: it's not as bad as you might think). Monday didn't bring all gloomy news for LSU. The football Tigers got a big commitment Monday from Lafayette Christian cornerback prospect Ju'Juan Johnson, who had previously spurned LSU for Colorado which got his initial commitment. In the mini battles between programs on the recruiting trail, score one for Brian Kelly over Coach Prime. Also Monday, LSU women's basketball All-American Angel Reese was named to USA Basketball's team for the 2023 FIBA Women's AmeriCup. One of LSU's new transfers, Aneesah Morrow, formerly of DePaul, has also been invited to a training camp next month to compete for one of the remaining roster spots for the tournament. Lastly, LSU's track and field teams took a slight dip in the national polls as well following this past weekend's SEC Championships at Bernie Moore Track Stadium. That's all for now. Baseball, football, basketball, track. We got quite a bit in there for you for mid-May, I think. Until next time, Scott Rabalais |
