Whoever runs the LSU baseball social media accounts definitely has a well-developed sense of humor. Above the photos of the Tigers' celebrating their 4-3 win Wednesday night at SLU were the words "Never in Doubt." Clearly, things were very much in doubt for LSU, down to its last strike trailing 3-1 in the top of the ninth in Hammond. But a string of clutch hits, capped off by Paxton Kling's two-run double down the left-field line and some shut-the-door relief work in the bottom of the ninth by Nate Ackenhausen lifted the Tigers (12-1) to the improbable victory. How improbable? According to LSU, in the SEC era (since 1933) this was just the 14th time the Tigers won as the visiting team when trailing by at least two run entering the ninth inning. Rare air, indeed. No such road magic for the LSU men's basketball team. The Tigers went to Arkansas on Wednesday night, and though the Razorbacks have been struggling all season LSU just couldn't find a way to shut down their offense in a 94-83 defeat. The loss drops LSU to 16-14 going into the Tigers' regular-season and home finale Saturday against Missouri (winless in the SEC), a loss that likely puts a strain on the Tigers' hopes of earning an NIT bid. The LSU women's basketball team had a sendoff in front of the PMAC Wednesday before those Tigers headed to Greenville, South Carolina, for the SEC Women's Tournament, an event which started with a pair of first-round games Wednesday. LSU, which has a double bye as the No. 2 seed, won't play until 5 p.m. CST Friday as it awaits the winner of Thursday's 5 p.m. contest between No. 7 Auburn and No. 10 Arkansas. Expect Auburn to win that one, which would likely mean a third bruising matchup between the teams which split a pair of five-point decisions in the regular season. What happens in Greenville may only have minimal impact on LSU's NCAA Tournament seeding, though the Tigers do go to Greenville with a shot at a No. 2 NCAA seed according to some of the bracket predictions. We've also a got a look at what Vegas oddsmakers think of LSU's chances of repeating as NCAA champions (hint: they think pretty highly of them). The LSU track and field squads were likely to pass the men's basketball team in the airport as they head to Boston for the NCAA indoor championships. See who they're bringing to the meet this weekend. And finally, our Jeff Duncan recently ventured to Lake Charles to check out the amazing resurgence of McNeese State basketball under former LSU coach Will Wade. It's a story sure to irritate some LSU fans who still carry a torch for Wade. News flash: He isn't coming back, folks. Thanks for reading and subscribing. You are the Paxton Kling to our ninth-inning rally, that's for sure. Until next time, Scott Rabalais |
