Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Dana Bash

CNN’s Dana Bash took Facebook’s Vice-President for Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, to task over the recent revelations and accusations involving the social media platform.

Bash interviewed Clegg for Sunday's State of the Union about the allegations of Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen. Haugen recently testified before Congress about her claims that the company constantly puts profits ahead of public safety and facilitated other  detrimental impacts on society.

“Did Facebook’s algorithms amplify or spread pro-insurrection voices ahead of January 6?” asked Bash.

Clegg offered a rambling answer about Facebook's “hundreds of thousands” of algorithms and complaints about “misleading discussions” about how those algorithms operate.

Bash was unimpressed with his word salad and absolutely grilled him. She took a similarly tough stance with Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, holding his feet to the fire over past comments about the 2000 election.

MEDIA LOSER:
TheWrap CEO Sharon Waxman

Former employees say TheWrap founder and CEO Sharon Waxman runs “a toxic environment” at the entertainment and media site, creating a “culture of fear” that is “demoralizing and degrading.”

A report by the Daily Beast collects a series of shocking anecdotes shared by current and former staff, including one employee who described how Waxman had called and cursed him out for taking time off work to take his fiancée to her oncologist for a cancer treatment check-up.

Justin Baragona, one of the report's authors, tweeted that additional former Wrap employees had come forward with their horror stories since the article was published.

Waxman told the Daily Beast that she “was very sorry to learn that some current and former employees have had experiences at TheWrap that are not consistent with our values or the environment we work to foster.”

We're highly skeptical of Waxman's non-apology. No one is talented or unique enough for it to be ok for them to allow an abusive work environment to fester.

The A-Block

'I hope I scared the sh** out of you!'

A little pre-Halloween treat, for those of you who like scary stories -- the talking heads on our television screens had plenty of ominous warnings for us.

Bill Maher delivered a detailed scenario on Friday night’s edition of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, in which former President Donald Trump retakes power, devoting his New Rules segment to the prospect of a 2024 repeat of Trump’s attempted subversion of the electorate — but a successful one this time.

“The Ding Dongs, who sacked the Capitol last year? That was like when Al Qaeda tried to take down the World Trade Center the first time with a van. It was a joke. But the next time they came back with planes,” Maher said, adding “I hope I scared the sh** out of you!

Margaret Hoover — along with her fellow CNN commentator husband John Avlon — has had enough of Republicans playing ostrich about Trump’s intentions to run again in 2024

“This man is running and he still runs the Republican party. Republicans need to get their head out of the sand and start dealing with it.”

“Yeah, out of something, the sand or other places,” quipped Jim Acosta.

Over on MSNBC, Mehdi Hasan was also sounding the alarm, warning his viewers that America was “in the midst of a rolling coup" and predicting that if Trump was the 2024 presidential nominee and the GOP controlled the House of Representatives, then “they will not certify a Democratic victory in 2024.”

Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was quoted in Peril, the book from Robert Costa and Bob Woodward that produced a number of stark revelations about the Trump presidency, comparing the Jan. 6 Capitol riot to the “great dress rehearsal” ahead of the 1905 Russian Revolution.

'Out of the Clemson University school of drama'

During the second quarter of the Tampa Bay-Miami game on Sunday, Dolphins defensive end Christian Wilkins took a painfully obvious flop after being mildly shoved by Bucs running back Leonard Fournette. The Tampa back gave Wilkins a slight push on the shoulder, and it was very clear that Wilkins was able to maintain his balance. But then, a split-second later, he threw his arms up in the air and began staggering backwards.

“That was Robert De Niro in his prime!” CBS analyst Tony Romo, broadcasting the game, said sarcastically.

“Out of the Clemson University school of drama,” Romo’s colleague Jim Nantz added, referring to Wilkins’s alma mater.

Watch the oh-so-dramatic moment here.
