OSHA rescinds COVID-19 vaccine rule for private sector

OSHA announced Tuesday that the Biden administration has withdrawn its COVID-19 vaccine-or-test requirement for private businesses with at least 100 workers after the Supreme Court blocked the rule. "OSHA continues to strongly encourage the vaccination of workers against the continuing dangers posed by COVID-19 in the workplace," the agency wrote.

Juan is scrappy. He’ll dive for every loose ball, wrestle a guy twice his size to get a rebound and charge, shoulder first, into a nest of defenders to take a shot. He’s fearless -- but not reckless -- and knows how to use his size to his advantage.

I thought of Juan as I listened to WNBA star and coach Dawn Staley and NBA Hall of Famer Alex English talk life, leadership and basketball in NetLife, the podcast we feature today in Leadership & Development. English talks about the tough, physical nature of the league (back in the 1980s) and the impact this had on his play. He was often manhandled on the court by bigger, stronger veteran players. He learned to become more active on the floor -- be faster, keep moving -- to keep elbows and bodies off of him.

Winning the talent game (and business!) calls for some Juan- and English-like scrappiness today. You have to get aggressive to attract and keep great workers. When an employee says another organization -- a larger one with deeper pockets and better brand recognition -- has offered him a position with a higher title and salary, you should be ready to counter in kind. Action wins. Employers who are passive right now will be manhandled.

And if you get manhandled in the talent arena, you might find yourself facing a worker exodus, like we see in today’s Recruiting & Retention story. Quitting, it seems, is contagious. Make sure it doesn't infect your organization.
