Good morning. Temperatures will be in the low 20s to mid-30s with cloudy skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Woman killed in Newport homicide ‘would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it’

  • Anielka Allen, who was allegedly killed by her husband last week, bought meals in the Beal College cafeteria for friends and classmates who were broke, and she let a friend and her family stay at her home when they had no place else to go.
Hampden waste plant plans closer inspections of trash after propane tank explosion
  • The plant that opened earlier this year already has measures to remove hazardous materials from the waste stream in place, such as magnets that can attract metal objects and a policy of inspecting incoming loads of waste. But the propane tank went undetected last week.

A jam session atop Mount Washington was on this dying Maine musician’s ‘bucket list’

  • Blind since the age of 12, Paul Dube can remember seeing Mount Washington's snow-capped peak in the distance when he'd perch in the branches of a pine tree near his boyhood home in Lewiston. He'd always wanted to play music at the top of that mountain. And after doctors gave him less than a year to live, he decided to make it one of his final priorities.

See how Maine subsidized Bath Iron Works over 20 years

  • A precursor to the $45 million tax credit that is the subject of a new political fight made up a third of the subsidies the shipyard received in a 20-year period. Most of that money has come from state tax incentive programs, and BIW receives a local tax break too as it faces competition from a heavier-subsidized shipyard.
  • The Lions had experienced considerable frustration in not having won a game since the 2016-2017 season. On Jan. 7, Belfast snapped a 47-game losing streak with a 52-51 victory over Mount View.
Another town on the Blue Hill Peninsula looks into dredging its harbor

  • One of Surry’s largest employers, Wesmac Custom Boats, suffers from a vexing problem for a business that depends on the water: Silt buildup means the town’s Patton Harbor boat launch is only available for the business’ use about an hour a day, at high tide.

Despite potential negative consequences, many still try to ‘help’ by feeding deer during the winter
  • “If we didn’t feed the deer, we wouldn’t have any deer here. There isn’t anyone here who has ever fed deer who ever lured those deer in to eat. [The deer] came here because they were hungry, and people started feeding them. They came here because there was no place else.”
