Baton Rouge distillery wins global recognition

BY MATTHEW ALBRIGHT | Staff writer

There's a world-class bourbon being distilled in Baton Rouge. Don't take our word for it; take the word of the TAG Global Spirits Awards, which were held in Las Vegas this year.

Here's the story behind Laissez Versez and the top honors the distillery recently brought home.

A judge tossed out charges against a Happy's Irish Pub employee who was accused of violating Baton Rouge's noise ordinances. The judge didn't mince words, saying the way the rules are written is "very subjective" and basically unenforceable.

It's the latest twist in a running debate over whether Baton Rouge should crack down on bars and other establishments for their noise.

When it comes to police chases, some local leaders were already calling for a change. The death of two Brusly High School students — who were bystanders in a chase that started in Baton Rouge — spurred some to say there need to be stricter rules on when police should and shouldn't launch a pursuit.

Then, early yesterday morning, another chase ended in a crash that killed a bystander. Here's what we know, and what the reaction has been.

Tensions in Baton Rouge's public defender's office boiled over yesterday at a meeting of the state board that oversees it.

The office's leader, Lisa Parker was already facing legal battles and sharp criticism from judges and a state lawmaker. Then, at the meeting, she faced accusations of poor financial management, hostile communication and other criticisms.

Here's what happened in the tense hearing.
