Baton Rouge Catholic community reflects on legacy of Pope Francis

BY VICKI FERSTEL | Staff writer

Remembering Pope Francis: Reflecting on Francis' 12 years as pontiff, local Catholics remarked on a legacy marked by joy and service, praising the pope's ability to carry their faith far beyond the walls of the Vatican and into the hearts of everyday people.

“From day one he showed us how to live how Jesus called us,” said Father Michael Allelo, from St. Aloysius Catholic Church. “He spoke with a pastor’s heart and he ministered with a pastor’s heart.”

Staff writer Aidan McCahill spoke with local Catholics on the legacy of Pope Francis, who died Monday at age 88.

Also, The Advocate's editorial writers shared their thoughts on his moral clarity.

Predictions for the NFL draft: Sports columnist Jeff Duncan weighs in on the Saints' chances during this week's draft:

"The New Orleans Saints might finally select a quarterback in the first round of the draft, ending the club’s mind-boggling 54-year drought.

"The Saints are expected to select a quarterback high in this draft, perhaps as early as Round 1. But it will be a surprise if they pull the trigger at No. 9."

Flying over to College Drive: New exit ramps that will allow drivers to more easily exit Interstate 10 and Interstate 12 westbound onto College Drive are set to open Wednesday. And, fingers crossed, the Essen Lane on-ramp to I-12 could reopen Thursday morning if work is completed as planned.

Staff writer Matthew Albright notes this means the College Flyover project, designed to fix a notorious Baton Rouge traffic trouble spot, is nearly complete.
