Be My Neighbor Day brings the beloved worlds of Mr. Rogers to Día de los Niños / Día de los Libros, the long-running celebration of children and books rooted for twenty-five years in the Latinx community of the Mission. This year over thirty local organizations will join us at El Parque Niños Unidos, to participate in a day of festivities promoting literacy, where families will receive free multilingual books, enjoy crafts and children’s performers like Daniel Tiger, and more.

Hella Roots: Cultivating Plant Knowledge

Anybody can buy some plants at a big box store and grow some flowers or cherry tomatoes, especially in our easy climate. But plants are more than just living decorations. If we learn to look, we can learn an entirely different way of being, one that’s been enmeshed with human culture as long as we’ve existed. We’ll poke at flower parts, go deep into the history of food crops, and meet an artist who uses them as her medium. Forum host Alexis Madrigal, with guests from the Conservatory of Flowers and the UC Botanical Garden, will explore a bouquet of botanical questions: What is a flower? How did humans come to create something like corn from its ancestor teosinte? What does it mean for a plant to be “native”?

Plus, we’ll be hosting a plant exchange! Bring a plant, take a plant!

How We Thrive: Asian American Healing, Co-Presented by CAAMFest

Cultural stigmas and intergenerational traumas make navigating mental health in the Asian American community complex, but modern day practitioners and healers offer expansive frameworks for a holistic approach. Hosted by Bay Area journalist Cecilia Lei, join KQED and CAAMFest for an empowering evening to redefine community resilience by honoring all parts of ourselves.

The event will feature comedy by Kristee Ono; a discussion between licensed therapist Soo Jin Lee of the Yellow Chair Collective, healing practitioner Angela Basbas Angel and community activist, author and filmmaker Satsuki Ina; and a tasting of bites by Chef Yana Gilbuena.
