British Business Group Vietnam
Dear achternaam,

Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Asia Pacific, Ms. Natalie Black, visited Vietnam from April 16 to 18.

During the first visit to Vietnam of Ms. Black, innovation and technology are be the main themes in her visit to Ho Chi Minh City, the visit included a visit to Vietnam Innovative Start-up Accelerator (VIISA), a programme that is powered by Dragon Capital and FPT to have an overview of how the programme operate and the growth of young and dynamic start-ups in the country on 17th afternoon as well as an informal buffet luncheon on 18th April to network with around 20 Tech entrepreneurs to get an overview of the current changes in Vietnam as the country moves towards a more digital based economy and to highlight the UK’s  expertise in the Tech industry.

The busy visit also included a meeting with the British Business Group of Vietnam (BBGV), DIT’s delivery partner in Vietnam to hear about their activities and plan and to brief BBGV on the latest updates of the OPD programme from 2020/21 and the regional trade plan.

The BBGV Business Centre’s performance against targets has been strong.  They were the top performing Chamber in the ASEAN region in 2017/18, delivering £25m in Export Wins – 50% of the total value of all of Export Wins by ASEAN chambers.  Generation of OMIS revenue, which is the key to self-sufficiency, has continued to grow strongly.  BBGV continue to explore other income generation ideas, including setting up an enhance service to provide longer service to companies looking at the Market.  This would provide office space and support to within the BBGV offices to British companies looking to enter the market, or who are new to market.

“I am very excited about my first visit to Vietnam, arguably one of the most dynamic economies in the world,” Ms. Black said. “I look forward to learning more about the opportunities in Vietnam and meeting the people and businesses that are working ever more closely to deepen the relationship between our two countries.”

Bilateral trade between the UK and Vietnam increased from £4.7 billion ($6.1 billion) to nearly £5.2 billion ($6.8 billion) between 2016 and 2017, in both goods and services. UK exports to Vietnam increased by £579 billion ($757 billion) in 2017 to £629 ($822 billion) in 2018, or 9 per cent. Bilateral trade went up 5 per cent. Key exports are pharmaceuticals and machinery and equipment. The UK is the third-largest EU goods exporter to Vietnam and the third-largest EU investor.
