British Business Group Vietnam
Dear achternaam,

BBGV is proud to assist various charities across Vietnam with the support of the membership.

Hau Giang province is one of the poorest areas in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam, facing poverty and often natural disasters. In order to support low-income girls who live in the poorer communes of Chau Thanh A, a district of Hau Giang, BBGV has provided scholarships to 110 school-girls to ensure that the girls can stay longer in school. This in turn has long lasting benefits within the community, as the younger generation will grow up with a higher level of education and ultimately financial independence.

BBGV joined with Bong Sen Centre for Community Development to distribute the 110 scholarships on Friday, 17 August 2018. The Ceremony was a meaningful occasion to recognise the outstanding performance and achievement of the girls within the 2017/18 academic year. By providing the scholarships, low-income families in the region will minimize the financial impact of the schooling and they will feel safe in the knowledge that their daughter is able to stay in school longer.

During the trip to Hau Giang, Alex Falter – BBGV Board Member and Peter Rimmer – BBGV Executive Director, also made home-visits to meet the school-girls families and encourage them with motivations for future developments. Families which welcomed Alex and Peter into their homes included:

1/ Mai: The family is living next to a small river with no access by any roads, Mai’s mother was involved in a car accident few years ago and now cannot work, the main family income comes from fishing, which generates less than 4 million VND /month. Her 6 year old brother, suffers epilepsy, and his health care costs his parents over 15 million VND per year for emergency treatments in Can Tho. Mai’s dream job is to become a doctor.

2/ Huong: With 3 daughters, between the ages of 6 and 12 years old, Huong’s parents have a difficult situation as their income is not stable and amounts to just approximately 3 million per month. Beside receiving BBGV’s scholarship, the household also receives micro-finance support from the Bong Sen Centre, where they borrow 1,5 million VND to raise 50 ducks which has meant they could  repay their first loan of 800,000 VND. Huong loves studying and hopes to become a teacher, so she can inspire many other girls to be successful in the future.
3/ Tran: Tran – is a cute 10 years-old girl whose sweet character belies her difficult situation. Tran lives with her mother, who has serious mental health issues which prevents her from undertaking stable work.  The only income for two of them comes from just 4 coconut trees – where each coconut is sold for just 2,000 VND. Tran rides to school on her donated bicycle and helps her mom everyday with cooking and other chores. Her favourite meal is just egg and rice. However, the difficult circumstances Tran faces has not dimmed her hunger for knowledge, her big passion is learning English, Tran also wishes to become a teacher in the future.
