BBMRI.nl 2.0 - Newsletter March 2020

10 years BBMRI.nl kick off at Health-RI conference

10 years ago BBMRI.nl started building the joint national infrastructure necessary to make maximal use of biosamples, images and data for health research.
This celebratory year, BBMRI.nl is making preparations to organize a National Biobank Day, as part of the "Weekend van de Wetenschap”, please let us know if you or your biobank would like to be involved.
For starters, it made a great occasion for BBMRI to present the results in a festive way at the Health-RI conference “Towards Data Driven Health” the 30th of January in Utrecht. The BBMRI community presented no less than 18 BBMRI.nl posters. Thank you for making it a memorable occasion. Read all about it in our news item.

At the Health-RI Conference 2020 “Towards data driven health”, Health-RI presented how it facilitates and fosters the Dutch health and research communities in realizing precision medicine. For a quick look back, check the the Health-RI conference report.

Biobanken.nl has a new look!

At the Health-RI conference, the update of Biobanken.nl was launched. Biobanken.nl provides biobanks with the opportunity to communicate information about biobanking and biobank research to the general public. On the advice of the Public and Patient Advisory Council of BBMRI, Aaike van Oord of the NKI, realized a full make-over of the website. The work was done in close cooperation with a diverse group of stakeholders, including patients and some big biobanks. It was supported financially by BBMRI. All biobank research professionals are invited to use biobanken.nl to communicate to a broad general public.

The strength of collaboration between biobanks

Researchers at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam discovered that the level of specific blood metabolites is heritable and that part of the heritability is explained by known genetic variants. Lead investigator Fiona Hagenbeek used data collected within BBMRI for twin families of the Netherlands Twin Register. The results were published in Nature Communications.

Wellcome Genome Campus, UK
The conference will bring together population scientists in epidemiology and biomedicine who are involved in longitudinal research, cohort studies, genome biology and the dynamic measures of physiology. Longitudinal studies are ideal tools for studying many things including age-related functional changes, and the development and progression of chronic diseases.

In 2020 we are celebrating 10 years of BBMRI, a year full of activities promoting the importance of biobank collections and biobanks.
