To showcase the variety of work in BBMRI.nl, we asked BBMRI.nl investigators about their work. What excites and challenges them the most, especially during the present COVID-19 pandemic? And how do they see the future for our activities?

We interviewed Prof. Stefan Willems head of the department of pathology and medical biology of the UMCG. He is vice-chair of the PALGA foundation and actively involved in WP-4 – Linking of Biobanks to Clinical Registries.

Next in the series, Prof. Aad van der Lugt, professor of neuroradiology and head/neck radiology and director of research and education of the department of Radiology & Nuclear medicine at the Erasmus MC. He is responsible for the imaging components in biobanking activities within BBMRI.nl.

Amsterdam UMC was breaking new ground in response to COVID-19

As soon as the first COVID-19 patients were hospitalized at Amsterdam UMC, Prof. Diederik van de Beek and colleagues initiated a biobank to collect patient samples. We asked the head of the Amsterdam UMC Biobank, Dr. Jörg Hamann, how this unique initiative came about.

Annual Europe Biobank Week conference: “Biobanking for Global Challenges!”

This year the largest European biobanking conference will be entirely digital.
Date: 17-20 November
Format: First virtual event
Program: There will be two different formats for this year’s conference: Live-stream sessions scheduled at a specific time across the 4 days of the conference On-demand pre-recorded sessions available for viewing. How the PALGA portal made life a lot easier
“We study a very rare form of lymphoma. That PALGA was able to track down all cases of Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) since 1990 is unique. Without the PALGA Portal, we would never have managed to trace those rare cases dispersed over more than 20 pathology labs”.
We asked Professor de Jong and her colleague Nathalie Hijmering, Coordinator of the HOVON Pathology Facility, how the PALGA portal has changed their work over the years.

BBMRI.nl recommendations for Sustainable Biobanking now also available via IARC
BBMRI.nl’s recommendations, good practices and background knowledge for improving biobank sustainability have been made available for the wider biobanking community through the International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC) Biobanking Learning Platform. The IARC Learning Platform provides a single access point to a wide variety of learning resources for the international biobanking and cancer research community.

Annual Meeting of the Dutch Society for Human Genetics (NVHG) – 17 September 2020, live online event
Joint meeting organized by VKGL (Vereniging Klinisch Genetische Laboratoriumdiagnostiek), VKGN (Vereniging Klinische Genetica Nederland) and NACGG (Nederlandse Associatie voor Community Genetics en Public Health Genomics). Prominent researchers in the field of Human Genetics will present their recent work at the annual event.
