A team of researchers from BCAM - Basque Center for Applied Mathematics and Ikerbasque, formed by Javier Fernández de Bobadilla - Ikerbasque Research Professor and Group Leader of the Singularity Theory and Algebraic Geometry line at BCAM; and Tomasz Pełka - Postdoctoral Researcher at BCAM, have successfully resolved a problem that had remained unsolved for over five decades. The conjecture belongs to algebraic geometry, which focuses on solutions of polynomial equations and has a rigid, arithmetic nature. Surprisingly, it has been proven using flexible techniques from symplectic dynamics
On this fifth episode of "Let’s write together the Mathematics for the future" Maira Aguiar (MTB), María Merino (CO) and Fernando García (AS) talk about mathematics and health within the Basque Modelling Task Force (BMTF) project together with the Basque Government.

This event of the European Mathematical Society (EMS) is held every four years and is considered the second most important event in mathematics in the world.  BCAM had a prominent presence at the European Congress of Mathematics (ECM) held in Seville from July 15 to 19, 2024. During the event, BCAM organized and participated in several key panels, contributing to the exchange of knowledge and the advancement of mathematical research and its application in various fields.

BCAM  continues its commitment to promoting responsible research by joining two key international initiatives: DORA (The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment) and CoARA (Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment).
BCAM, TECNALIA, UPV/EHU and EUSKAMPUS FUNDAZIOA, launch ORE4citizens, a comprehensive program of free activities for all ages aimed at bringing science closer to the public through marine renewable energies. The OREgaua celebration on the evening of September 27 at the Nautika Itsasgunea building of the University of the Basque Country (Engineering School of Bilbao), in Portugalete, featuring live music, games, talks, and experiments suitable for all ages.
The MTB (Mathematical and Theoretical Biology) Group at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) is currently on a research visit to several prestigious institutions in Asia.  They have visited Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Japan, and Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. In Seoul, Korea, they organized a symposium during the KSMB-SMB conference at Konkuk University, which had over 700 participants.  The group also attended SYMOMATH 2024 at Universitas Indonesia as plenary speakers. Currently, they are visiting the math department at Universitas Udayana in Denpasar, Indonesia.
This biennial event brings together prominent international researchers in the area of residual minimisation methods (MINRES), including the Discontinuous Petrov-Galerkin method and Least Squares Finite Elements.

This year, BCAM has once again brought together leading experts in the field of machine learning, this time in collaboration with ETH Zurich. The event, titled "The Mathematics of Machine Learning," took place in Zurich, further expanding its reach and impact within the mathematical community. The workshop was organized by Prof. F. Yang and Prof. N. He from ETH Zurich together with Prof. S. Mazuelas from BCAM.
