BCAM researchers win one of the SEIO-Fundación BBVA 2022 Awards

The article by Verónica Álvarez, PhD student at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics – BCAM, Prof. Santiago Mazuelas, Ramón y Cajal and Ikerbasque Research Fellow at BCAM and Prof. Jose A. Lozano, Scientific Director of BCAM, has been awarded in the category of Best Applied Contribution in Statistics.

The article Probabilistic Load Forecasting Base don Adaptative Online Learning, published in IEEE-Transactions on Power Systems, includes artificial intelligence techniques that learn to predict the energy consumed, adapting to changes in consumption patterns. Learning and prediction techniques are proposed and their performance is experimentally evaluated in multiple scenarios. In particular, we develop adaptive online learning techniques that update model parameters recurrently, and sequential prediction techniques that obtain probabilistic forecasts using the most recent parameters. The method is evaluated using datasets corresponding to regions that have different sizes and show varying consumption patterns over time. The results show that the proposed method can improve the performance of existing techniques in a wide range of scenarios.

Mathematics of Machine Learning Workshop will take place in Bilbao

BCAM organizes the Mathematics of Machine Learning workshop that will take place in the center between 25 and 28 October 2022. The event has the aim to “increase the visibility in the general mathematical community” of the mathematics of machine learning.
The workshop focuses on two target audiences: mathematicians interested in machine learning and researchers already working on it.
We would like to encourage all the researchers interested in attending the workshop to register. For more information on the workshop and registration process, please visit the workshop website.

6 companies selected to participate in the Mathematical Modelling Advisory Service carried out in collaboration with DFB

BCAM, in collaboration with Beaz, the public company of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia that offers support to companies and entrepreneurs, is going to carry out for the third year the mathematical modelling consultancy service. The aim of this initiative is to increase R&D&I projects in local SMEs and start-ups through the transfer of advanced knowledge.

This year, the companies that will receive advice on data diagnosis are Biomecánica y Ergonomía, a company dedicated to sports medicine and human performance; Arctic Sea, a company dedicated to the monitoring of perishable products to reduce food waste; Serikat Consultoría e Informática, a company dedicated to the information technology sector; and Didaktiker, a company dedicated to language teaching through artificial intelligence.

On the other hand, the companies that will receive advice on fluid dynamic modelling are Nautilus, which develops floating platforms for off-shore wind power, and Arrecife, which is dedicated to the generation of electricity from sea waves.

Corine Laurenda Sinsin is the new researcher at BCAM from the Science by Woman program under the Women for Africa Foundation

  • Sinsin is an early career female researcher who is going to work along Dr Dae-Jin Lee
Corine B. Laurenda Sinsin is an early female researcher from Benin Republic (Africa). After her undergraduate studies in agronomy and natural resources management (2013), she completed a Master of Sciences degree in climate change and education (2015); and later got her PhD in climate change, biodiversity, and ecosystem services (2021) at the University Felix Houphouët Boigny. Her PhD research work focused on the resilience of mangrove ecosystems to climate change in West Africa, considering the case study of Benin. In addition to several prestigious grants and awards, Laurenda has cumulated work and research experiences with the Laboratory of Applied Ecology (LEA), the Laboratory of Biomathematics and Forest estimations (LABEF) and the African German Network of Excellence in Science (AGNES).

“The motivation for joining WomenxAfrica came from my scientific and leadership career ambitions”, explains Laurenda Sinsin. “Joining WomenxAfrica has enlarged my network and will open ways for North-South collaborations for women’s empowerment”

"I hope that this work will help to change people's impression and feeling towards this discipline”

  • BCAM-UPV/EHU and University of Bordeaux PhD Student Badreddine Benhellal has defended his co-supervised thesis
Badreddine Benhelall has defended his co-supervised thesis Spectral analysis of Dirac operators on domains the last 6th of July. The main goal of the thesis is to investigate the spectral properties of two types of perturbation of the Dirac operator, which are singular from the point of view of scaling. Benhelall along with the supervision of Prof. Luis Vega, Basque Center for Applied Mathematics -BCAM – UPV/EHU and Prof. Vincent Bruneau of Mathematics of Bordeaux (IMB) – University of Bordeaux. Badreddine Benhelall graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Rouen. After he studied a Master’s in Analysis, PDEs and Probabilities in the University of Bordeaux.

What was the most interesting part of your thesis? What was the most challenging one?

I think the most interesting part of my thesis was access to research funding and opportunities from BCAM-UPV/EHU and the University of Bordeaux. This access allowed for extended fieldwork visits and participation in conferences, workshops, and courses, which made it easier for me to meet colleagues and make connections with institutions that significantly strengthened my thinking and work. As for the difficult part, I would say that I had to readjust to a different rhythm of life for the research work on my dissertation and for daily life in general
