This event, organized by BCAM in collaboration with Diputación Foral de Bizkaia and BAT – B Accelerator Tower, is Europe's leading workshop bringing together mathematicians and industrial companies.

In this edition there are four challenges from the following companies: Lookiero, Quantum Mads, BAT - B Accelerator Tower and Danobat.

The academic participants that will participate in  ESGI 188 are a diverse group of people, including MSc and PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, and professors, with expertise in Mathematical fields such as Operations Research, Optimisation, Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Computer Sciences, Physics, Finances, Data Analysis, among others.

Registrations will open soon. Participants must choose which challenge they want to join, and each registration costs 50 euros.
SiliconBurmuin involves Ikerlan, Vicomtech, the UPV/EHU, CAF R&D, the GAIA cluster, Achucarro Basque Center for Neuroscience, BCBL, BCAM and IIS BioBizkaia.. From BCAM, Serafim Rodrigues as PI and Joanna Danielewicz as researcher are working on this project.
The project combines science, technology and industry, similar to those that have given rise to most neuromorphic start-ups in Europe. Its main scientific-technological objective is to research and convert neuroscience knowledge into neuromorphic technology and intellectual property (IP) that can be adopted in the next generations of AI chips to meet the most demanding needs of industry.
Initially, the focus is on vision applications for autonomous train navigation and early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

These visits are part of "Matematikhariak," BCAM's outreach program, aimed at inspiring STEM vocations among students visiting the center.
Javier Sanguino (PhD Student, Machine Learning) and Andrea Olivo (Postdoc Fellow, Harmonic Analysis) worked with Artaza Romo BHI. Students had the chance to interactively explore mathematical applications in education, learning more about pure mathematics and the challenges and applications of AI through a Kahoot and examples from Andrea and Javier's work.
Ainhize Barrainkua (PhD Student, Machine Learning) and Pablo Merino (PhD Student, Linear and Non-Linear Waves) engaged with Salesianos Barakaldo school. Students learned about Algorithmic Equity and Machine Learning, biases in AI algorithms and their real-world impact, and key aspects of Partial Differential Equations fundamental in Mathematical Physics.

Additionally, on March 25th, Madre de Dios school visited BCAM to learn about the ORE4CITIZENS project. 45 high school students visited BCAM facilities for a talk titled "The Powers of Shazam: AI, Music, and Floating Wind," led by Vincenzo Nava, BCAM researcher.

Elnaz Zohravi, Postdoctoral Fellow at BCAM, recognized by the City Council of Bilbao for her contribution to the social and public life of the city in the VI edition of “Reconocimiento A Mujeres Migradas Bilbainas”

This award, presented by the Mayor of the City, Juan Mari Aburto, highlights her valuable contribution to the social and public life of the city. In the case of Elnaz, the distinction has been awarded in the category of Science.

More than 2000 people celebrate Mathematics Day at the BCAM Naukas 2025 event

As every March 14 for the past six years, the Chair of Scientific Culture of the UPV/EHU, the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM), and the Naukas dissemination platform have celebrated International Mathematics Day with the BCAM Naukas outreach event.

This year, the event has managed to bring together more than 2,000 people at the Bizkaia Aretoa of the UPV/EHU, both in-person and online formats. The outreach day has become a great opportunity to celebrate the more playful and attractive side of this formal science.

A Data-Mining Approach to Understanding the Impact of Multi-doping on the Ionic Transport Mechanism of Solid Electrolyte Materials: The Case of Dual-doped Ga0.15/Scy Li7La3Zr2O12.
Journal of Materials Chemistry A, 12 (2024)

This study presents novel computational methods applied to the technologically significant solid electrolyte materials, Li6.55+yGa0.15La3Zr2−yScyO12 (Ga0.15/Scy-LLZO), in order to investigate the effect of the distribution of Ga3+ on Li-ion dynamics. Utilizing a specifically designed first-principles-based force field, molecular dynamics, and advanced hybrid Monte Carlo simulations, we systematically examine the material's transport properties for a range of Ga3+ and Sc3+ cationic concentrations. Additionally, we introduce innovative post-processing methods employing data mining clustering techniques, shedding light on Li+ ion behavior and conductivity mechanisms. Contrary to prior assumptions, the presence of Ga3+ in octahedral sites, not tetrahedral junctions, optimally enhances Li-ion conductivity, unlocking Li-ion diffusion pathways. The research illuminates how dopant distribution influences Li+ site occupancy and conductivity, offering key insights for advanced solid electrolyte design.

PI(E) DAY!

The International Day of Mathematics (a.k.a π Day) is celebrated on March 14th  and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to celebrate in a big way! After last year's success, BCAM organised a new edition of its Pi(e) Day, a morning of fun and delicious pies in a day for sharing & celebrating together.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

We are happy to share this photo of a part of our amazing team of BCAM researchers and staff in honor of International Women's Day, March 8.
We celebrate the diversity, dedication, and talent that each person brings to our scientific community. Together, we are writing the mathematics of the future; a future for which we work every day in the hope that it will be increasingly inclusive and equitable.

ALBA LARRAYA PARTICIPATED IN THE PRESENTATION EVENT OF THE YEAR OF QUANTUM 2025 IN DONOSTIA

Alba Larraya, (PhD Student. Singularity Theory and Algebraic Geometry at BCAM), who works on cryptographic systems, a crucial line for post-quantum cryptography , participated in the presentation event in Donostia of the Year of Quantum 2025 , a key year for scientific and technological progress in the Basque Country.

During the meeting, the Department of Science, Universities and Innovation detailed some of the actions that – within the BasQ Strategy – will be developed by the Basque Government during the coming months and that will mark the Year of Quantum in the Basque Country. These actions will be complemented with the initiatives that may be developed by the provincial councils, within their participation in BasQ. Alba took part in the round table moderated by the deputy minister Adolfo Morais, in which the challenges and opportunities that quantum technology offers were discussed.
