🗓 Scientific activities
The Strategic Mathematics Network (REM) and the Mathematics Research Institute of the University of Valladolid (IMUVa) are organising a four-day meeting, from 8 to 11 November 2021, in Valladolid, under the title "New Bridges between Mathematics and Data Science". The aim is to bring together researchers in mathematics, machine learning and data science, to exchange ideas and advance in the construction of new bridges between these fields and make visible the work already done. Euskampus Bordeaux Eguna returns in person in Donostia-San SebastiĂĄn and coincides with the 10th anniversary of Euskampus
The Euskampus Bordeaux Eguna 2021 will be held again on 28 and 29 October at the Tabakalera, Donostia-San Sebastian. Jose Antonio Lozano, Scientific Director of BCAM, will attend the event on behalf of the center. TRANSMATH project will be at Euskampus Bordeaux Eguna 2021. It is a project created in December 2018 for mathematics and its applications as part of the Cross-Border Cooperation Laboratory (LCT), involving BCAM, TECNALIA, the University of Bordeaux, the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) and the Bordeaux National Polytechnic Institute (INP). The aim of LCT is to generate an institutional framework for research teams from the Basque Country and Bordeaux to work together. In this edition, Dr. Luz Roncal will be representing BCAM at the TRANSMATH project. On October 29th, the Joint Research Lab on Offshore Renewable Energy (JRL-ORE) and the RENOVABLES project, both with the participation of BCAM, will be presented in the Project Plaza.
BCAM collaborates with Runnea in the implementation of NEXT, an experimental development project in the area of sport and health

BCAM has signed a contract to develop a research project in collaboration with the company Runnea and thus contribute to the implementation of the NEXT tool.

The main objective of the project is the development and implementation of mathematical models and Artificial Intelligence tools for monitoring the performance and physical improvement of users of the Runnea Academy platform.

Interview with Ilya Smirnov who is joining BCAM as La Caixa Junior Leader

Smirnov will join the Singularity Theory and Algebraic Geometry (STAG) group led by prof. Javier FernĂĄndez de Bobadilla
Ilya Smirnov will join BCAM  as La Caixa Junior Leader in the Singularity Theory and Algebraic Geometry (STAG) group. His research interests will be mainly on the study of singularities from the algebraic point of view. He has been a researcher at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) and a postdoctoral student at the Stockholm University (Sweden) supervised by Boris Shapiro and at the University of Michigan (USA), where Smirnov has worked with Mel Hochster
What motivated you to apply for the Junior Leader fellowship at BCAM?
Some people indeed might be surprised to find a pure mathematician, like myself, at the centre for applied mathematics. The credit for my recruitment goes to Prof. Javier FernĂĄndez de Bobadilla, who is leading the Singularity Theory and Algebraic Geometry group at BCAM. Not surprisingly, my research is also focused on singularities, although from a different angle. This difference gives a potential to a good collaboration and a good opportunity for me to broaden my knowledge and network.

“Being able to lead a project again in the challenge call shows that the research of the Applied Statistics line of BCAM is following the right steps”

Dr. Dae-Jin Lee is the principal investigator of the S3M1P4R project together with his research team of mathematicians and statisticians
Dr. Dae-Jin Lee is the principal investigator of the project New proposals for estimation, prediction and validation of semi-parametric models for the analysis of complex data with applications in Health and Climate Change (S3M1P4R). The S3M1P4R project belongs to the "research challenges" category of the National R&D&I programme 2020. The main objective of this type of projects in this category is the development of solutions oriented to the eight great challenges of society in the Spanish research plan. The aim of the S3M1P4R project is to develop new methods for the estimation of semi-parametric regression models, which is a field of research that combines the use of parametric and non-parametric models, and which is very useful when analyzing data with complex structures (correlated data, data with partial or incomplete information).
"My work as a researcher consists of advancing the natural theoretical development of mathematics"

Prof. Javier F. de Bobadilla has obtained one of the R&D+i 2020 Projects - Modalities "Research Challenges" and "Knowledge Generation" from the State Research Agency
"My work as a researcher consists of developing mathematics driven by curiosity and the natural internal development of mathematics," explains Prof. Javier Fernåndez de Bobadilla. "Applications often appear once the theories reach maturity. There are several examples throughout history, such as the algebraic developments that motivated Abel and Galois, around the solvability of polynomial equations, which later found a multitude of applications (for example, in cryptography and cybersecurity), or the development of Differential and Riemannian Geometry, without which Einstein could not have formulated his theories".
