The murder of a policeman in a Paris forced an early end to campaigning for the leading candidates in France’s presidential election, as they head into Sunday’s first-round of voting with the race wide open. Police haven’t released the identity of the attacker, who was shot dead by officers on the Champs Elysees. Trump predicted the terrorist attack would have a “big effect” on the upcoming election, without naming which candidates he believed would benefit.

 

Trump’s tax plan is coming next week. U.S. President Donald Trump said in February he would release a “phenomenal” plan to overhaul the tax code within two or three weeks. Sources told Bloomberg that plan will be presented in the latter part of next week. In an interview with the AP, Trump said the plan would result in tax cuts for both businesses and individuals.

 

Should DeVos block an embattled student loan giant’s expansion? Months after state and federal regulators sued Navient Corp. for “systematically” cheating student debtors, the company wants to add more borrowers. If authorities stop the sale, the move would be comparable to regulators blocking transfers of home loans between big banks and mortgage companies.

Justice Gorsuch took his first major action on the U.S. Supreme Court by casting the deciding vote to let Arkansas begin executing a group of death-row inmates. The high court cleared the state to execute Ledell Lee, one of eight convicted murderers that Arkansas has been trying to put to death before one of its lethal-injection drugs expires at the end of the month. Arkansas executed Lee minutes after the court rejected the last of his requests. Lee consistently claimed he was innocent.
