As British Gas HIKES PRICES 5.5% and others will likely follow - together we can beat the rip-offs...

New. MSE Big Energy Switch Event 10

Special Bulb deal: saves typically £320/yr, with 95% 'great' service, no exit fees and renewable electricity to boot

A message from Martin: "Millions will be furious with the news from British Gas that on Tue 29 May it'll increase standard prices by an average 5.5% - £60 on a typical bill. Other firms' customers will rightly fear their providers will follow.

"Yet some of this ire must also be turned upon themselves. We live in a market where the do-somethings pay far less than the do-nothings. Many can save £100s comparing and switching - it's the same gas, same elec, same safety; only price and service differs.

"Many people tell me they're scared, confused or worried about moving to new, unknown firms with no track record. To help we've been beavering away to secure special deals, and have two from Bulb and EDF in our latest Big Switch event.

"The plethora of loss-leading new providers means we can no longer smash the market's cheapest - instead we aim to secure a rock-bottom price, from a reliable firm, with great service or a big name, meaning huge savings.

"While this won't help vulnerable customers for whom switching is too much, for everyone else, especially if you're one of the 60% of the UK on a standard tariff, don't waste time ranting at energy firms. If possible get up off your arse, do a comparison and ditch those overcharging you."

Big Switch 10 Winner I:
Bulb - typical saving £320/yr, 95% 'great' service, no early exit fees & it's renewable electricity

This new Bulb Vari-Fair deal, available via our Cheap Energy Club, is nearly the market's cheapest. What makes it stand out is that Bulb's built up more than 300,000 customers in 3yrs, due to huge word-of-mouth recommendation. In our last customer service poll it got an outrageous 95% 'great' rating (from 295 votes).

How its price compares on typical usage
On regulator Ofgem's typical dual-fuel direct-debit average use (varies by region)

- Avg Big 6 standard tariff, after BG hike: £1,146/yr
- Big Switch 10: Bulb £823/yr (incl £25 cashback + £30 bill credit)
- Market cheapest: £807/yr - Outfox the Market - a new, small firm

Which is your cheapest varies with region & usage so...
Get YOUR EXACT PRICE & saving via a full market comparison

To explain further... this is Bulb's normal tariff, except we've arranged for you to get an extra £55 off. That's £30 dual-fuel bill credit within 3mths of switching (half for elec-only), plus our usual MSE £25 dual-fuel cashback (£12.50 elec-only) we give on any tariff, if we can switch you.

The tariff is variable, so Bulb can move prices based on wholesale costs (what suppliers pay for energy). Last year it actually cut 'em twice, before a modest 2.8% rise this year - still leaving it, as can be seen, very cheap. If prices do change you'll get 2mths' notice, and can leave any time without exit penalties.

It's worth noting, Bulb also has a popular refer-a-friend scheme, where the referrer and newbie each get £50. Though with our deal you get a tad more without needing to know an existing customer. Here are key facts:

- It's available for dual fuel & elec-only, incl Economy 7.
- Bulb will pay any exit fees from your current supplier, up to £60 per fuel.
- You need to pay by monthly direct debit & get paperless billing.
- It's not available on prepay or in Northern Ireland.
- The end date depends on demand, but it's likely only a few weeks away.
- As it's variable you can move home with it, though you'll need to sign up again at your new property.
- 100% of electricity & 10% of gas is from renewable energy sources.

Big Switch 10 Winner II - TWO-winter fix:
EDF - typical saving £235/yr (£470 over fix). Good if you want a big name, price surety & won't often switch. ONLY 10,000 available

A two-year fix is great for those who want longer-term peace of mind, and it means you don't have to bother to switch as regularly. Our winner here is the special EDF Simply Fix Apr20, available for new and existing EDF customers (for many of whom it's a no-brainer). It's fixed until 31 March 2020, ie, the rate won't change until then.

How its price compares on typical usage
On Ofgem typical dual-fuel direct-debit average use (varies by region)

- Avg Big 6 standard tariff, after BG hike: £1,146/yr
- Next cheapest 2-year Big 6 fix: £1,059/yr (incl £25 cashback)
- Big Switch 10: EDF £911/yr (incl £25 cashback)
- Cheapest 2-YEAR fix: £903/yr - small provider Engie
- Cheapest 1-YEAR fix: £810/yr - new, small provider OneSelect

Which is your cheapest varies with region & usage so...
Get YOUR EXACT PRICE & saving via our long-fix comparison (to see all tariffs, just untick the long-fix filter in results)

As you can see it is by far the cheapest big name two-winter fix, and only a little more than the cheapest from small provider Engie (which has similar £30 early exit fees). Feel free to go with any - we got this as many of you tell us you want a name you know.

- Only recipients of this email (using that email address) or existing Cheap Energy Club members can get this tariff.
- Available for dual fuel & elec-only, incl Eco 7.
- Not available for prepay or in Northern Ireland.
- Pay by monthly direct debit or quarterly cheque/DD.
- The 10,000 limit is switches (so dual fuel counts as two).
- It's portable so you can take it with you if you move home.
- Leave early & there are £70 dual-fuel exit fees (£35 single fuel).
- Some existing EDF custs will be charged early exit penalties if they switch to it, depending on their current deal.

Prepay or live in Northern Ireland?

No deals here, we're afraid. But you can still switch and save...

- Prepay customers: Try our prepay comparison - savings are smaller, typically £90/yr, but it could still be worth doing. For bigger savings see if you can switch to a credit meter. See cut prepay energy costs.

- Northern Ireland: No UK comparisons include NI, but see Cheap NI Electricity or the Consumer Council for Northern Ireland's tool.

Your common energy-switching questions answered...
For more, see the full Cheap Energy Club FAQs

Q. What info do I need to switch? It's best if you have a bill, and input kilowatt hours (kWh) into Cheap Energy Club, rather than cost. But don't worry if you don't know your usage; the tool can guesstimate for you. While the answer won't be perfect, it's usually far better than doing nowt.

Q. Does MSE make money from this? Yes. Like all energy comparison sites, we're paid each time you switch through us, yet we give you about half in cashback (money you don't get if you go direct), so it's a win-win. The rest helps cover our costs and hopefully makes us some profit.

Q. How does Cheap Energy Club work? It does three things:
1) We compare ALL market tariffs to show your price and saving.
2) You get £25 dual-fuel cashback (£12.50 single fuel) if we can switch you. It's paid roughly 90 days later.
3) We monitor for better deals. You set a 'trigger saving', eg, £150/yr, then we alert you if you can save this by switching again.

And some quickies...

Q. Can I switch if I've a smart meter? Yes, but you may lose functionality. See Smart switch.
Q. How come it's put my price up when I'm fixed?
The rate's fixed, but your bill depends on your usage. See Unfair direct debits.
Q. How do I find the standing charge and kWh cost?
They vary by region, so we display yours in the comparison result.
Q. Can I pick a date for the switch?
No. Providers don't allow this.
Q. I'm in credit. Will I get it back?
Yes. See Reclaim credit.
Q. I'm in energy debt. Can I switch? Usually, see Switching in debt.
Q. I've solar panels. Can I still switch? Yes. See Solar info.
Q. Is monthly direct debit cheapest?
Yes, but do regular meter readings.
Q. Why do you show a different cost from my supplier's? Enter kWh and we show the avg each month, yet your direct debit's an estimate so can differ. Direct debit help.
Q. I've an independent gas transporter - can I switch?
Yes. See IGT help.

New. Shift debt to 25mths' 0% NO FEE card & get £20 cashback

Pay interest on a credit card? There's a new price war... now 5 cards PAY you to cut the cost

Balance transfers are the key weapon to cut costs if you're one of the millions hit with hideous interest rates. You get a new card that pays off credit or store card debt for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0% - meaning more of your repayments clear the debt. Many of these charge a one-off fee - a percentage of the sum switched - but a host of new cards give cashback which can be bigger than the fee, so you're PAID to cut costs. Here are the 3 best cards that give cashback, plus 2 other top picks...

PS: Don't apply willy-nilly - our Balance Transfer Eligibility Calculator shows the cards you've best odds of getting, without hitting your creditworthiness. Plus, go for the lowest fee in the 0% period you're SURE you can repay in.

  • Top if shifting £100-£999. New M&S Bank (eligibility calc / apply*) cardholders can shift debt to 32mths 0% for a 0.99% fee (min £5). But apply via our link and if you shift £100+ by 30 June 2018, you get £25 back. That's more than the fee for transfers of up to £2,525, so you're PAID to shift debt. After the 0%, the rate jumps to 18.9% rep APR.

  • Top if shifting £1k+ & if you can clear the debt within 2yrs-ish. New Barclaycard (eligibility calc / apply*) cardholders can shift debt for up to 25mths 0% for NO FEE (well, it charges 2% then refunds it), and you get £20 cashback if you move £1k+. Whether you get the full 0% length depends on your credit score, so if our eligibility calc shows low odds, you could be better off with M&S Bank above, or Sainsbury's Bank (eligibility calc / apply*) where new cardholders can move debt for 28mths 0%. Again, this has NO FEE (1.5% charged initially & refunded) - and with this and M&S Bank's card, if accepted you definitely get that length.  After the 0% period, the rates soar to 19.9% & 18.9% rep APR.

  • Top if shifting £1k+ if you need even longer. M&S Bank's card above wins if you can pay off in 32mths. If you need longer, a different Barclaycard (eligibility calc / apply*) gives new cardholders up to 35mths 0%. There's a 1.35% fee (initially 3.5%, with the difference refunded) but as it pays £20 cashback on &poun d;1k+ transfers, that's bigger than the fee on up-to-£1,480 transfers. For even longer, new MBNA (eligibility calc / apply*) cardholders get up to 36mths 0% with a 1.99% fee . After the 0% period, the rates soar to 19.9% & 21.9% rep APR.

  • Balance Transfer Golden Rules. Full help and ALL best buys: Balance Transfers (APR Examples).
    a) Clear the card or shift again before the 0% ends or the rate jumps.
    b) Never miss the min monthly repayment or you could lose the 0%.
    c) Don't spend/withdraw cash. It usually isn't at the cheap rate
    and withdrawals hit your creditworthiness.
    d) Some are 'up to' lengths, so you may get a shorter deal even if accepted.
    e) You must usually do the transfer within 60/90 days to get the 0% and cashback.

New. How to get 25% extra Tesco Clubcard pts for ALL of 2018

Plus lots more Clubcard tricks incl beat the deadline to swap vouchers before rewards are slashed

Tesco's Clubcard is one of the most generous loyalty schemes... if used right. And there are two big developments all 16m Clubcard holders need to know about. Full help in Boost Tesco Pointshere are the main details...

  • New. 25% extra points when you go wallet-free. You normally earn 1pt per £1 at Tesco but it's relaunched a promotion, running till 31 Dec, where for every £4 you spend in store you get an extra point if you pay via its app. How to get a 25% Clubcard boost

  • Huge Clubcard cuts coming - hurry to beat them. You can swap vchs for 2, 3 or 4x their value at many retailers, but in a big shake-up they mostly move to 3x soon. While a few improve, many of the best will get worse including Pizza Express, London Zoo and Lightwater Valley.

Tesco had planned an immediate revamp last Jan but after we led calls for it to give people notice, it delayed the change to summer. So time's ticking - but act before 10 June and they'll be valid for 6mths, incl summer hols. Full info, and which rewards are changing, in Clubcard overhaul

  • More Clubcard tricks, incl reclaim lost vchs. To play the scheme like a symphony you can also:
    - Reclaim lost Clubcard vchs from the past 2yrs.
    - Extend Tesco vchs if they're about to expire.
    - Boost your points haul via online surveys and more.

New. Junior ISA allowance UP - get 3.5% on kids' savings

You've a new, bigger £4,260 allowance you can save this tax year in a JISA, but how do they stack up?

Junior ISAs are tax-free accounts for you to save (or invest) for anyone 17 or under. The money is locked away until they're 18, when they're converted into a normal ISA they can access. Last week the annual amount you can put into a JISA increased to £4,260 per child. So are they worth it? Full info in Top Junior ISAs, here are the key numbers...Kids Savings

  • Earn up to 3.5% in a cash junior ISA (and shift Child Trust Funds into one too). Right now, Coventry BS pays 3.5%, Nationwide 3.25%. Both are variable and accept transfers in, meaning if your kids have a JISA paying a pittance, you can switch it to one of these. JISAs aren't for everyone, though - here's what to consider:

    - A JISA is tax-free but kids hardly pay savings tax anyway. So for most, the key is the top rate. See normal kids' savings below, and how their tax on interest works.
    - Beware - it's their money when they hit 18. Cute toddlers can become rebellious 18-yr-olds, and as it's then their money, even if you planned for them to put it towards a home, there's nothing stopping them blowing it on booze etc.
    - You can transfer cash Child Trust Funds into cash JISAs. CTFs were opened automatically for kids by the Govt till 2011, when JISAs came in. As they're defunct, they likely pay rubbish interest so it's best to switch. See CTF to JISA transfers.
    - Is it worth using a JISA to invest? That's down to your attitude to risk. Remember, while investment returns can beat savings, there's a risk you could lose more than you save. See investment JISAs.

  • Earn up to 4.5% in a normal kids' savings accountIf you aren't keen on locking away your child's cash in a JISA, the top children's regular savers pay up to 4.5% if you can put away up to £100/mth. For lump sums where you have access, see children's easy-access savings to get up to 3%.

  • I'm a grown-up and fancy these rates. Can I beat the system? You can, yet it's morally questionable and there are things to be aware of. See Martin's (Morally questionable) way to earn 2.5% on up to £50,000 savings.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q: I have owned my house for the past five years, and now live with my partner who has never owned her own property. Are we eligible for any first-time buyer ISA savings schemes to buy our first home together? Martin, via email.

MSE Rosie's A: Happily, you are. Even though you're not a first-time buyer, your partner will still be able to make use of a Help to Buy ISA or - if she's under 40 - a Lifetime ISA for your joint purchase.

These schemes let you save towards a property purchase and get a 25% boost to your savings, though there are limits to the max bonus you can get. To be clear, these ISAs are individual products, so your partner will be able to use her full bonus towards your joint purchase even though you're already a homeowner. For full info, including eligibility criteria and the best places to save, see our Help to Buy ISA and Lifetime ISA guides.

Please suggest a question of the week (we can't reply to individual emails).
