Celebrate with your chosen family at SAAM’s Pride Family Day. March to the beat of DC’s Different Drummers, dance to the sounds of Afro-Brazilian group Batala, and enjoy the acapella music of Snowday. Embrace your creativity with hands-on crafts for all ages, strike a pose in our photo booth station, and show your inner spirit with face painting (for visitors ages 12 and younger). Explore the galleries to learn more about LGBTQ+ artists in SAAM’s collection with an art scavenger hunt. Enjoy a special menu offered by the Courtyard Café.

DC’s original crafting hour is here for your summer memories. Relive your summer camp days at Handi-hour with throwback arts and crafts. Curious about American art? Join us for a 30-minute in-person conversation about selected works from the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s collection. This program is presented in American Sign Language (ASL) with voice interpretation for hearing participants.

In-Person Beyond the Studio Workshop: Digital Sketching with Carlos Carmonamedina

Join artist Carlos Carmonamedina of DC is my City for a live-sketching workshop using your personal iPad and digital graphics apps such as ProCreate, Adobe Fresco, and MediBang. After a brief introduction and tutorial, the group will explore the galleries to practice what they learned. Participants will end the session by creating a one-of-a-kind digital poster inspired by SAAM’s collection. Visitors must provide their own iPad and download a graphics drawing app ahead of time. Space is limited; ages 14 and up.

Celebrate a uniquely American art form with Take 5: Jazz at SAAM, a series of free, live performances in SAAM’s airy Kogod Courtyard. June features Sarah Elizabeth Charles, a vocalist and composer based in Brooklyn. Charles has released three critically acclaimed albums with her band, SCOPE and has performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the first annual Culture Summit in Abu Dhabi. Borrow a board game, purchase refreshments from the Courtyard Café, and enjoy summer evenings at SAAM.
