Dear Hopeful Garden Grower, Remember back to last winter. You were thinking, “I want a garden!” You scrutinized seed catalogs and ordered beautiful things, some with Latin names that you couldn’t pronounce. You strolled down the nursery aisles and arrived home with trays of cute, tender seedlings.
When the days got warmer, you marked off a spot, cleared the ground, and turned over the dirt with muscles that you didn’t know you had. Dropped seeds into knuckle-deep holes in neat rows. Tamped the earth around the eager seedlings to help them settle into their new digs.
Through summer, you yanked weeds, beat back bugs, cursed rampaging rabbits (or was it woodchucks?), and toted watering cans and hoses (how much is enough?). You got dirty, sweaty, hungry, and tired, watching and waiting for your plot to become picture-perfect. Like those in magazines and on Facebook and Pinterest.
Then, in August you bought vegetables at a farm stand, thinking: “Why aren’t my tomatoes like this?” (If they suffered from from blossom-end rot, there could be a calcium deficiency in the soil.)
Sound familiar? Feeling frustrated just thinking about it?
Take a deep breath. We’ve all been there. This season will be different.
As long as you have a garden site that gets 8 hours of sunlight (preferably with southern exposure), soil with a pH range of 5.5 to 6.5 (which you can adjust with peat, lime, or other organic material), and water, you can grow a tasty garden.
Why? Because you’re about to read The 2019 Old Farmer's Almanac—the same Almanac that farmers, gardeners, homesteaders, and other smart people have relied upon for over two centuries. Swiss Chard? Never Heard of It | When it comes to growing vegetables, some things have changed since we began publishing in 1792. Among our garden hints in the 1919 edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac was a suggestion to plant Swiss chard because it was “not so well known in New England as its merits deserve. Some esteem it equal to beet greens.”
Swiss chard has come a long way in the last 100 years, making several appearances in the 2019 edition. Did you know that Swiss chard and quinoa are in the same plant family? Or that it takes 5 to 6 cups of packed leaves to yield 1 to 1 ½ cups of cooked Swiss chard? And guess when the best time is for planting Swiss chard? Early in the season while the weather is still cool, in slightly acidic soil. Anyone else hungry now? All this talk about food is distracting! | Beets, Broccoli, and Brussels Sprouts. Oh, My! | What were we talking about? Oh, yes. Planting! According to the age-old practice of planting by the Moon’s phases, cycles of the Moon affect plant growth. Plant annual flowers and vegetables that bear crops above the ground during the waxing of the Moon. Plant flowering bulbs, biennial and perennial flowers, and vegetables that bear crops belowground during the waning of the Moon.
There are more details in the latest edition of The Old Farmer’s Almanac, including specific planting dates for different regions throughout North America. | | Growing a Pinterest-Perfect Garden | Gardening is an experiment. No one (so far) can control the weather, the bugs, or any other force of nature. You can make good choices and educated guesses and adopt best practices and still experience crop failures. But if you follow the guidance in The Old Farmer’s Almanac, embrace the surprises and uncertainties of each gardening season, and look forward to the next, you are on the road from grief to glory.
If you want to learn more about planting the perfect garden and find much more useful information, wit, and wisdom, you can get it—along with a bundle of BONUSES—with an Old Farmer’s Almanac Gardening Club Membership! |
