Eleven nursing homes run by the Department of Veterans Affairs received the lowest-possible one-star rating out of five from the agency on both overall quality and as a result of surprise inspections. In Bedford, Massachusetts, a nurse’s aide reported a colleague’s alleged abuse of a 94-year-old veteran. Family members said another veteran contracted scabies, a contagious skin rash, that went undiagnosed for months, and he and others sometimes waited for hours after buzzing nurses for help. The troubles in Bedford are part of a larger concern for the VA’s care of elderly veterans in its nursing home system, the subject of an ongoing joint investigation by USA TODAY and The Boston Globe.
