Alan's mum, Jesusita Querobines Weedon, was among the first in her family to leave her rural fishing village in the Philippines to pursue higher education. But when she moved to Australia, her qualifications weren't recognised. She was forced to start all over again in a new and often unfriendly land. "She became another Filipina cleaner," Alan says. "Before that, she was seen as just another 'Filipina bride'." In this tender and personal online article, Alan traces his mother's journey before he was born, as he grieves her tragic death from cancer last year. He finds his mother was part of a great Australian migration: a generation of women determined to overcome the mail-order bride stereotype. Read the story or tune in to The History Listen to hear more. Then, Rear Vision explores the chequered history of shared cinema between America and China. From banning American films that would "poison Chinese people's minds" to welcoming select box-office hits, the Communist state has had a long, tumultuous relationship with Hollywood. So, is the fraught relationship destined to end, as President Xi Jinping tightens his grip on the film industry? Read the online story to find out.
