Whether inspired by their dreams, religious beliefs, or their internal emotions, self-taught artists have shaped the creative culture of North Carolina and broadened the boundaries of Outsider Art to the world.  Join Holly Tripman Fitzgerald, Chief Curator, and discuss the work of Annie Hooper and Vollis Simpson (currently on view in CAM's exhibition: Minnie, Clyde, Annie, Vollis) and how museums display outsider art.

Enjoy music by Jeff Sanchez while you dine at CAM Café, the restaurant serves dinner Thursday evenings from 5-9 PM and offers half-price bottles of wine. Jeff has been playing music in Wilmington since 2006, when he joined local rock-n-roll band The Clams as a drummer, but since he wanted to sing he slowly gravitated to rhythm guitar.  He also played guitar and sang with Upstarts and Rogues and helped produce their cd of original music.  He has since produced a CD for the Clams, and is now producing a CD for Soul R Fusion.  Among his favorite singers are Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Harry Nilsson.

5 PM: Emerging Artists Performance;  7 PM: Main Festival Concert
The 11th annual Port City Music Festival returns to CAM and for the second year kicks off with a performance by young musicians at 5:00 PM playing a selection of chamber music, prior to the main concert at 7:00 PM.
(Free and open to the public, preregistration suggested for both concerts)

Guest artist and educator Mr. Mark Herbert (founder of the Broccoli Brothers Circus and Nature Brigade Parade) will get creative with puppets and props made out of recycled materials! Mr. Mark will teach us about the environment, recycling and healthy living through art and songs! Explore our galleries and learn about other artists who create out of recycled materials. Enjoy a day of fun, art and learning with the whole family! Kids@CAM is fun for all ages!
Parental supervision required at all times. No pre-registration necessary.

Taking inspiration from CAM's current exhibition Along the Eastern Sea Road: Hiroshige's Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido, (on view through Sept. 22), Teddy Burgh, has composed music for select works that he will perform in the gallery and explain his inspiration for the compositions. Dr. Burgh is a Professor teaching subjects that include Music of Ancient Israel and Music in Religion in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at UNCW. He has lectured at CAM and performed in the Jazz@the CAM series as part of the FROG Project.
