Uber Technologies and Postmates have sued to block a California labor law that limits gig economy companies' ability to classify their workers as independent contractors. A federal judge has given independent truckers a temporary exemption from the law.

"Belonging" has come into use at some companies and in certain HR job titles as an additional or alternative word for discussing diversity and inclusion and making employees feel comfortable at work. "Diversity is a fact, inclusion is a behavior but belonging is the emotional outcome that people want in their organization," argues Christianne Garofalo, who leads Heidrick & Struggles' executive recruiting focus on diversity and inclusion.
