‘Tis the season of end-of-year round-ups, and we’ve got a bounty of them today. First, our top 25 films of the year, which jump-rope between feature-length investigative documentaries to avant-garde short films and YouTube essays.

Then, our recommendations for New York shows to see during the final weeks of this wild year — from Simone Leigh to Bill Viola, these works explode with color, as if making up for the bleak weather. Finally, we’ve got a spoof on the Spotify Wrapped that feels, to me, like a personal attack (“You averaged 4 free glasses of wine at each show opening you attended”).

Also today, Koyo Kouoh will be the first African curator of the Venice Biennale, a crater on Mercury has been named after Japanese-American sculptor and art educator Ruth Asawa, and AX Mina on the savage beauty of Anne Samat’s woven altars.
