TODAY'S TOP STORY A gadget a day keeps the doctor away I get my steps in, never eat processed food, sleep like a baby and splurge on an occasional yummy lemon drop martini (my favorite mix!). I also keep track of my numbers to flag potential problems early. And a friendly reminder: An at-home device never replaces a health care professional, so email, call or visit your doc if youβre worried about something. The basics High blood pressure is nothing to mess around with. It can lead to strokes and heart attacks. The Omron M6 Comfort costs $105, has been clinically validated and uses a color-coded system to make interpreting results easy. Or try the $109.99 Withings BPM Connect, which works with your phone, keeps stats in the app and is perfect for traveling. When something's not right with your body, youβll often feel a telltale shift in your body temperature. Take a look at the $51.06 Braun Noβtouch 3βinβ1 thermometer, which works without contact and is speedy and reliable. The $29.97 iProven thermometer gives you an accurate reading in just a second. A smart scale like the QardioBase X ($94.95) can help you keep the pounds off. It calculates your body mass index (BMI) and body composition and offers a ton of stats to work with. Also worth checking out: The Wyze Scale X ($39.98), with its comprehensive stats and sleek looks. It works for babies and pets, too! The next level Want to get more serious about health tracking? Blood glucose is a key indicator of body health β and crucial for diabetics to know. The Dexcom G7 and Contour Next One both use pads and a phone app to tell you your levels around the clock (subscription prices vary).I fully recommend getting yourself a dynamometer, too. Try this Gripx one or this Camry one, both for $29.99. They give you a window into muscle strength and physical health, and you can log your stats over time. The more muscle you have, the stronger and safer youβll be as you age. As far as basic health improvements go, upping your daily step count is a real winner. Use your phone or invest in a smartwatch or fitness tracker. These solid options from Apple, Fitbit and Garmin are on sale now. Skip these Steer clear of menopause tests (they're not accurate enough), home genetics tests (hello, privacy intrusion) and cholesterol tests (the readings are unreliable). Get professional help instead. I'm feeling healthier just writing this. Stay well, friend. And be sure to share this with someone in your life whoβd appreciate it. |
DEALS OF THE DAY SPF for your BFF (Beautiful Friendly Face) As an Arizonan, I know a thing or two about sunscreen. Hereβs my best tip: Wear it every day. Slather it on your face, ears and hands, minimum β any exposed skin. Here are my faves for any price point. Bargain: Grab this two-pack of SPF 50 Banana Boat spray sunscreen ($13.62) to keep your skin safe and your hands clean. Itβs sweat- and water-resistant for up to 80 minutes and feels nice and light. It goes on super easily and even cools you off a little as you put it on. Pshhh! (Spray sound.) Midrange: On your face, any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen, but if you want to treat yourself, this cream from Coola ($25.84) is SPF 50, fragrance-free and has antioxidants. It feels a little like a serum when you first put it on, then it melts into your skin without a white cast. Splurge: Until you look at the price per ounce! Turns out, the main reason people donβt wear sunscreen is that greasy feeling β so Supergoop! invented one that absorbs super fast. Put this massive jug ($68, or $3.78 per fluid ounce) by the door to remind you to put it on β itβll last you the whole summer. |
WEB WATERCOOLER π¨ Dropbox data breach: A hacker gained access to emails, usernames, phone numbers, open-authentication tokens and multifactor authentication data on Dropboxβs Sign eβsignature platform. Next time you log in, youβll get an email to reset your password. Double-check the sender address to make sure any emails come from dropboxβ .β com or dropboxmailβ .β com. Disturbing trend: Teenagers are using AI "nudification" apps to create deepfaked nudes of their classmates, no consent needed. Just upload a photo of someoneβs face, and boom β a naked pic appears. You can get prison time for this kind of stuff. Parents, talk to your kids. π§ Better late than never? Over 340,000 folks had their personal data compromised in a breach of a U.S. consulting group last year. The U.S. Justice Department gathered the data for a civil case, and it includes names, birthdays, addresses, SSNs, and medical and insurance info. If you get a letter or email from βGreylock McKinnon Associates Inc.,β it's legit. Iβm too techy for the catwalk: Models are ditching IRL runways for βAI fashion.β Upload some old photos to the platform and get paid for your likeness in AI-generated fashion campaigns. Hmm β¦ Should I upload some pics from the β90s? π Small-biz boost: Amazon is giving over $250,000 in grants to small businesses that earn less than $1 million per year. Plus, they're rolling out a new Small Business Success Studio β think free tutorials on loan applications and website optimization. Applications close May 24. TikTok (Taylorβs Version): Taylor Swiftβs songs are coming back to TikTok thanks to a new licensing deal with Universal Music Group. They've ironed out the royalties and AI concerns for an undisclosed (probably astronomical) price. No more bad blood here. What goes around comes around: Notorious cheating site Ashley Madison is swarming with sextortionists. Scammers get cheaters to send nudes, then they threaten to send them to the cheatersβ families and bosses unless they pay thousands. Karmaβs a youβknowβwhat. π Letβs-a-go! Super Nintendo World is coming to Universal Studios in Orlando in 2025. Major attractions include a Donkey Kong coaster and a Mario Kart ride β plus, meet-and-greets with Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Toad. Wonder how many gold coins itβll cost. |

TECH LIFE UPGRADES Save energy, save money, save the world: Open up Settings in Windows, then choose System and Power (or Power & battery on a laptop). At the top of the screen, youβll see recommendations for cutting down on your computer's energy use. Mac file shortcut: If you need to rename a bunch of files on macOS, you don't need to do it one by one. Select them all in Finder, then hold down Cmd and click on one of them. Choose Rename to apply the same change(s) to them all. Super-cool iPad tip: If you're on a website or in an app with regularly refreshed content, like social media, try this: Just tap on your screen, pull down slightly and let go. Whatever you're looking at gets refreshed in an instant. Boom. You look good: The best selfies don't have half the frame obscured by your arm. Instead of taking them the normal way, prop your phone against something and use the timer function to take your snap, giving yourself (and your pals) a few seconds to look your best. Walk down memory lane: On Facebook on the web, head to a friend's profile, click the three dots on the right, then select See friendship. Here, youβll see all the photos you're in together and all the messages you've exchanged. Neat. |
BY THE NUMBERS 50% of Americans Support the TikTok ban. And 46% think itβs a First Amendment violation. Yes, I support the ban. TikTokβs Communist China-based parent company has nine months to change hands or its time is up in the U.S. Tickβtock! 29% of remote workers Are logging in from a vacation destination β¦ without telling their bosses. If thereβs no explicit rule against it at your company, itβs fair game to work from wherever you want. But calling in from Margaritaville? You may not be telling, but your new tan and conveniently blurred background are dead giveaways. $3 tip For your Dominoβs driver will get you a $3 coupon. The company says it wants to fight βtipping fatigueβ by βtipping you back.β Pretty good, albeit a little cheesy ... You have till mid-September to take advantage of this offer. |

UNTIL NEXT TIME ... The answer: 50%. It's best to keep your eβbike's battery in a cool, dry place, not fully charged and not totally empty. Really, anywhere between 40% and 60% is best. π² Remember as a child when air for your bike tires was free? Now it's $1.50! I asked the gas station attendant why. He said, "Inflation." Thanks for reading, friend.
