| | 🚘️ Self-Driving Vehicle Competition Heats Up | Self-driving cars are in that awkward pre-teen phase at the moment. | There are constant growing pains, like General Motors shutting down Cruise in December. | There’s also an initial battle royale between Google’s Waymo (first to market) and Tesla (launching in Austin, Texas, this month). | Waymo reached 10 million paid rides about one month ago. Already in business in Austin, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Phoenix, it’s currently expanding in the Bay Area, including to San Jose. | In the same report, CNBC said Tesla will start “with about 10 vehicles.” Compare that to the more than 250,000 monthly rides Waymo is already servicing and Tesla is in scramble mode to compete as Waymo gobbles up early market share. | Of course, Tesla relies on a camera-based system, whereas Waymo uses lidar and radar. | Some are predicting Tesla’s version will not be as safe. And the current limits of self-driving cars are imperfect. Driving is inherently dangerous, but there’s something unsettling about driverless technology when it’s possible it causes some deadly accidents. | (One expert even predicted Tesla’s imminent Austin test will be “a disaster.”) | Self-driving rides also are more expensive than Uber or Lyft at the moment. Hopefully the technology continues to move forward … in the safest way possible. | | 📊 Stat of the Day | | | 💰️ Deal Alert: Today’s Top Deals | | | | | 🎙️ Podcast | | Full Show: $4,200 Amazon Mistake and New Rental Car Ripoff Alert |
