Best of 2017

This week, CRC Daily takes a look back at the most popular articles, tips, and resources from 2017.
Sample credentialing checklist

MSPs and credentialing specialists often have the responsibility to make sure that all of the steps in the credentialing process have been executed in the processing of any particular application. This is a critical responsibility because plaintiff attorneys will often claim that missed steps represent negligence on the part of the hospital. Some steps, if not performed timely or if missed entirely, have very little relevance for whether a particular applicant should have his or her requests for privileges approved or denied.

Tip: Resist pressure to rush-credential employed physicians
Fundamentally, there should be no difference between how employed practitioners and independent practitioners are credentialed. Verifying the information and evaluating current clinical competence should be the same regardless of whether the applicant internist is an employed hospitalist or an independent internist opening his or her own office.

Busting HIPAA myths

Published 12/28/2017

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires covered entities (CE) to protect and confidentially handle patients’ protected health information (PHI). MSPs, physicians, and their organizations must remain vigilant or risk violating HIPAA. Luckily, HIPAA is a fairly cut and dry regulation as far as healthcare laws go. Or is it? Too often, organizations fall for common HIPAA myths and erroneously incorporate them into otherwise sound, good-faith compliance efforts. That can lead to wasted time and resources, duplicative work, or even outright noncompliance.

Florida Supreme Court finds external peer review reports discoverable

Published 12/28/2017

Finding that external peer review reports are not protected from disclosure by the state constitution, the Florida Supreme Court (the “Court”) reversed the decision of the Second District Court of Appeal of Florida regarding a case of a patient suing a hospital for medical negligence, including negligent hiring and retention.

Burnout: A toolkit for medical staff leaders

Published 12/27/2017

The following is hardly an exhaustive list but rather a potpourri of ideas and thoughts that can help the individual recharge, re-energize, and re-engage. There is no one size fits all, but maybe something will click and engage you or a member of your medical staff to address the burnout challenge.

Working with doctors: Are we having fun yet?

Published 12/27/2017

I started working with doctors as a college student. During the summers, the company-owned hospital where my mom worked paid me pretty well to work in the outpatient reception area, preparing medical records for patient appointments and then filing them. This small but creditable hospital only had seven physicians on staff (some were husband-and-wife teams), and they all lived in the same row of houses built specifically for physicians.
