The Swindler Sisters of Cape Breton
This past Tuesday our feature on one of the most wild, brazen fraud attempts in memory was published online. By the end of the week, the four women at the centre of the story—three sisters and their mother—who had claimed $56 million in sales across ten companies were officially sentenced to between two and four years of prison for their crimes.
The Saker sisters did it all: cooking, baking, waiting tables, managing the books and paying the bills as they grew their culinary empire on Cape Breton Island. But when a routine audit unravelled an elaborate, years-long tax fraud, the web of lies intensified in this unbelievable story of the family that nearly swindled the CRA out of millions.
