🥊 (Technical) Trouble in Streaming Paradise |
Last weekend, Netflix broadcasted a sanctioned boxing match between YouTube celebrity Jake Paul, 27 years old, and former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, now 58 years old. |
This type of reality TV, video-game style matchup proved to be a farce, as the fight itself was boring and sad. Tyson’s legs seemed to run out of steam about two rounds into the eight-round fight. Neither threw many punches. Paul won by decision as the two reportedly pocketed a combined $60 million. |
However, Netflix “won” by drawing more than 108 million live viewers globally, including 65 million concurrent streams at the peak. |
Memes all across social media revealed many people experienced technical difficulties with the stream, including at least one member of Team Clark. Netflix also scrapped a live broadcast of the “Love Is Blind” reunion show after it just wasn’t working technically. |
Why does it matter? Netflix owns the exclusive broadcast rights to two NFL games on Christmas Day as well as WWE match events starting in January. |
All eyes will be on the leader of the streaming world. Can these new companies shelling out millions or billions of dollars for sports rights and other one-off events handle the technical load? We won’t have to wait long for the next chapter. |
